Job summary

The Department for Business and Trade works to grow the UK economy, supporting businesses to invest, export and innovate. The Business Strategy and Briefing team helps drive this mission. We work across 30 sector teams to shape delivery, support senior decision‑making, and ensure stakeholders are well informed.

The teams work includes building trusted relationships with colleagues across DBT to coordinate the effective delivery of projects, briefing and correspondence. We help bring clarity, pace and consistency to fast‑moving and high‑profile work.

Job description

This is a leadership role in the briefing segment of the team. Your responsibilities will include:

Managing a large team of 4 6 HEO and SEO colleagues. Embedding refreshed ways of working, supporting colleagues, and fostering a positive, inclusive and delivery‑focused team culture.
Rapidly responding to fast-moving commissions, supporting the team to deliver inputs into briefings, presentations and dashboards to a high standard.
Maintaining relationships with senior colleagues across the department, ensuring the team maintains its reputation as a trusted point of contact for drafting and briefing, and incoming requests are directed to the correct teams.
Driving quality improvements across the department, by influencing private office, strategy and digital teams to deliver better outcomes for end users.
Shaping the teams systems and driving continuous improvement. This includes leading our work on embedding new AI tools using Microsoft Co-pilot and Amazon Quick Sight.
Developing new dashboards, KPIs and reporting tools to keep senior stakeholders informed of progress.

This role comes with end‑to‑end ownership and a high degree of autonomy. You will be managing a large team, trusted to exercise judgement and maintain grip on delivery.

Your precise work areas are likely to evolve over time. You should expect to shift your focus as new needs and priorities arise.

This is a stretching role. You should be interested in developing the team, and building our capability. This includes supporting our work to use AI to drive improved performance.

Essential Criteria:

The below criteria are essential and will be assessed at application stage

As a manager, you should:

Have experience in coaching and supporting teams to deliver multiple commissions to tight deadlines.
Be enthusiastic about driving change, focused on developing and improving systems, identifying innovative ways of working and embedding this across a team.
Role model a flexible, open-minded, and innovative approach, encouraging the team to be comfortable with change.
Be effective at engaging and influencing senior leaders.
Be experienced at drafting high quality briefings and letters.

From a technical perspective, you should:

Be competent at using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Co-pilot
Have experience of building AI capability within teams and embedding AI-enabled solutions, or be enthusiastic to learn about this.
Have experience in Microsoft SharePoint Lists, Amazon Quick Sight and Power Automate, or be enthusiastic to learn about this.

Desirable criteria:

It is beneficial if you have the capabilities below. Training and support will be provided if you dont yet have this experience:

Knowledge of correspondence systems, including eCase.
