Balgove-Larder

Was originally very excited to work here as I have previously loved working in hospitality and also have a passion for  food and have been to Balgove on several occasions over the years with friends and family previously. What goes on behind the scenes is not what I expected. Things are falsely advertised and certain staff bully younger/more vulnerable staff  to the point where they decide to quit. Management does nothing about it and are treated just as badly if not worse  by the company.  Very bad training and as staff turnover is so quick it is hard for Balgove to build a team. Other staff at so miserable to be there it is hard for I not have it effect you and staff being made to cry by other staff is a common occurrence. Overall a very disappointing experience and the first job I have ever quit due to negative reasons. 

I have really enjoyed working consecutive summers at Balgove, one in the Cafe and another out and about on the farm. I've gained valuable communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills while earning a good wage. Tips are shared between all staff  as a percentage of total hours worked, these can often add up to an additional £1/ hr. 

Throughout the shop, cafe, butchery and steak barn there are is lot of talent and some fantastic characters who are testament to the much loved position of the business within the local community.

I cant say i would recommend working for the store Certain staff within management are difficult to be around and hard to work with.

As a non  management employee i found that i didnt seem to have my concerns listened to when reporting how i felt but from what i heard thats a common thing there. 

Staff discount is good and the workers on the shop floor/cafe/butchers & barn are lovely and made it an enjoyable place to work . Just depends how much you can tolerate from management.

Have worked at Balgove for many years and love it - it is hard work and that was made clear in the interview but the co-workers are great and the quality of produce is excellent - makes it easy to sell and believe in. It's long hours but always busy so the day goes quickly and so nice not to have to pay for parking at your workplace. Staff discount is good and feel that management do actually care - birthday cards etc. One happy team member

If you’re looking for a pleasant job within a farm shop avoid Balgove. I’ve never experienced a place like it! 

Jobs are advertised regularly as they can’t hold on to staff. And no wonder, there’s little to no leadership, instead staff are intimidated and disrespected. 

The atmosphere is awful and staff are miserable working there. My time there felt like a prison sentence! Such a shame as it could be so much better. 


Started working school holidays when I turned 16 and then for a year after school with some travelling mixed in which they accommodated. Have kept coming back as there's always lots of work to do and the pay is good. Management direct but good and fair and I've learnt loads being there.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No clear instructions throughout day, constant job changes before one job is completed, which is chaotic at times

Retired recently with Balgove being my last role and was there for 6 years. A really lovely place to work. No denying its hard work and the customers are mostly lovely, but will look back very fondly at my last role. 

Good people, great eggs. What more can I say?

Well I suppose I could say lots of people from Dundee. So of you don't like them then best steer clear.

Giant cucumbers, potentially a side business here

I interviewed for the farm shop and started a couple days later. Very physically demanding to the point of back breaking. Poor training given very much left to het on with it and figure it out.
