I have been working for Dorothy House for a few months now and have been very impressed. The interview stage was very thorough and fair. The reception was outstanding and the induction process both interesting and informative. The job was exactly as advertised and my new team all very friendly and helpful. All the managers are very friendly and approachable. The work life balance is what you make it. There is an element of flexible working but at the end of the day the patients are the priority (quite rightly). The main hospice is located in Landscaped grounds and is surrounded by a very supportive community. The clinical staff continue to amaze me and the retail staff out in the many shops are hard working and committed to helping support the hospice. Not forgetting the incredible fundraising team who always come to work with a smile and spring in their step. All supported by a full HR team and education department.

The business as a whole is developing and has just received a rating of "Outstanding" by the CQC. Just being able to support the clinical teams who provide an excellent service to the community is reward enough. But as an employee I have been very satisfied working for Dorothy House. The care shown to patients and employees makes working here a real pleasure.

When I began volunteering I got to know a fellow volunteer and we were mostly in the back rooms and upstairs sorting stock together while the manager served the till. As another volunteer joined it was more fun because a job was a task done with a friend and it made it more enjoyable to do.
My typical day would be anything from spending it all sorting , to being on the till all the time, with a small amount of sorting on the counter. While sorting upstairs I learnt the gift aid system and how to print the labels and put people on the system, this meant that stock could be put out then onto the shop floor.

The hardest part of my job would probably be one time where we got in these metal dishes as a donation and they were really tarnished, we were scrubbing away for an hour through the whole pile  with metal polish and by the end of it my hands were killing me.

i had started on the 16th of may and i was thinking it was going to be boring and strict but it was not it was a very fun day full of challenges and fun and learning you are allowed to take a break whenever you wanted within reason. not every 10 minutes ,The facilities was good the things you would expect was in the right place and the staff are very nice and like to have a laugh within reason of course, I was walked through the health and safety manual and given a tour of the shop and told where things go. The manager is very nice not too picky on how i looked . I was trained on the use of the tills and pricing guns

Dorothy House has been going through a period of enforced change which has been challenging for all staff particularly long standing members. As a member of the executive team it has been fraught and empowering , challenging and rewarding in equal measure. The work is wonderful and the staff dedicated. Change particularly in a charity environment is hard but necessary to make the organisation financially viable and fit for purpose to continue to provide the care and meet the organisation's vision.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Feel valued.The staff and customers are friendly.Warminster branch good unit for a charity shop.I’m rushed or pushed into tasks I’d be uncomfortable or struggle with, found my place there.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Its starting to get overstaffed at the moment.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Professional and friendly.Calm not rushed.High but realistic standards.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I usually steam the clothes and help out with the ebay products.

The work that Dorothy House does for its patients is amazing. Unfortunately the management are apalling, little or no support for staff, increased workload, no work or life balance. There are no opportunities for advancement to a higher grade. Changes take place without consultation. It has a caring culture but unfortunately not for its staff. I would avoid working there unless you are happy to work long hours with no consideration.

Everything I heard of the Hospice itself was fabulous but the retail end was all over the place.  Great promises of support which never really materialised, big plans from management but seems to be a disconnect between upper management and the stores in the reality of implementing them.  Though with lack of management did come a good deal of autonomy at store level.

Loved volunteering here. If it's not rated 5 stars overall, it's only because I couldn't rate the compensation 5 as it was a volunteer position. 
The people here are so lovely, as is the workplace culture, really lovely place to volunteer. 
Hardest part of the job was dealing with unreasonable customers, but even that was pretty easy. 
Can highly recommend volunteering here. It's for a great cause and gives a great experience. 

I worked a paid role as a warehouse sorter in the branch in Trowbridge and really liked the staff there and I was very comfortable in the job! Unfortunately it was only a summer temporary position as I would have been happy to stay on if I weren't going away to university! There is a lot of training paperwork if it's a long term role but I would say it's worth it for the pay and the job :)

Although the charity itself is very good, the retail side isn’t if you are employed here. Management is not really interested in the employees’ welfare but mainly in targets and  profits-the individual does not matter, which is why there is quite a high turnover in staff.
Also I have noticed that there are no employees of ethnic minority groups here and only white faces on any brochure 
oor leaflet.
