You need to arrive 15mins before you officially start and still work - UNPAID, only 15mins but it all adds up. Staff aren't given chairs and are expected to stand on their feet all day, ignoring clear and simple medical advise about the side effects of standing all day on your feet. Procedures are chopped and changed regularly - seemingly without any thought or foresight. Deputy managers are expected to do the same job as full managers but get paid significantly less. Staff are pretty much told what to say to customers, as if we're puppets. Like a lot of small workplaces, gossip is rife and in my opinion so damaging - not the company's fault obviously but nothing is done to stifle it either. Until recently you'd have to pay the company back through your wages if your till was short at the end of the day - whether they found out the reason for the shortage or not. However should your till be over they'd just pocket it - couldn't they donate it to their chosen charity? Maybe they do. I doubt it.

You can learn a lot if you apply yourself, there are workshops to go on, in-store training can be done via the e-Learning site. Some managers will pass on their knowledge, some don't want to train new people - they'd prefer someone to come in ready to hit the ground running.

My first manager, was fun to work with but didn't want to train people, got frustrated when I'd ask for guidance.
My next manager was more experienced, would train staff and make it fun - had an arrogant aura though.
My third manager was also experienced but can be the most miserable, passive aggressive, spiteful, childish person, all in one day - and just plain rude towards staff and customers alike. They'll make up/alter rules to suit themselves, often regarding holiday/lieu days. They'll lie through their teeth to staff at any store to justify their actions. Also one of the worst gossipers I've ever worked with, and so incredibly two-faced - again towards staff and customers. A complete hypocrite, will bemoan a staff member for a mistake, then be guilty of the exact same or a very similar error.

Parts of the job I liked; the offsite training days. The retail side of the job is enjoyable, the discount is generous (25%), however if they could, I bet they'd reduce it! The bonuses are decent, they've been better in the past - but at least they haven't scrapped them completely. The Christmas parties are partly paid for, travel, drinks etc, moved from December to January to save money (despite one year making £13.5million before taxation).

Worked for the company for just under two years. A few pro's and cons for sure, you get extensive on site training as well as off site to equip you with all the tools you should need to do your job. It can be extremely fast paced work. Which could be extremely rewarding.

Management itself was horrendous you never knew if you were coming or going, one day could be a good day and another day would be dealing with a extremely aggressive manager.

My personal experience with this particular person could be the most miserable, passive aggressive, spiteful, childish person, all in one day - and just plain rude towards staff and customers alike. I have honestly never seen or been the subject of the type of abuse this person put myself and other members of staff through. Due to this person I had to walk from the job and was put on anxiety medication to help with the stress and self esteem issues I obtained due to working with them.

As a whole I'd recommend the company as someone to work for but the management of this particular store as not someone to even consider working with.

Not a good company to work for. Start at 845 to dess window, not paid till 9am. Stores run on only 2 staff members most days making it impossible to get your full lunchbreak. Lunchbreaks are unpaid so this is unfair. Expected to stay back for late customers despite being open 8 hours each day. You aren't allowed to tell a customer you are closed/closing, even if they appear 30 seconds before closing to carry out a lengthy transaction. If you have childcare commitments or rely on public transport it's a nightmare. 

Trained with cringeworthy 'talk' cards that tell you what to say to customers. For example, you are required to introduce yourself and ask the customer's name in return. It comes across as intrusive and weird. Security policy of asking for photo ID to view certain items of jewellery insults most customers who think they are being singled out as potential thieves. The staff then bear the brunt of the customer's irritation. 

Have to deal with a large amount of rude customers who will argue with you over everything from ID requirements to the interest charged.  The job takes its toll mentally, and not having a proper break or getting home in a timely manner doesn't help. 





coming to work, it's relaxed, fun and relatively easy if you learn the systems quickly. I've worked part-time for several months now and I've really enjoyed my time here.

 I agree it can be problematic if you have a poor manager, but the overall experience with the company is excellent. the pay is good, the quarterly bonuses are a great incentive, it's just been announced another xmas bonus which really helps in the cost of living crisis at the moment and the 10% increase in pay (nearly £11 an hour) is definitely above average which will rise again with the new nmw in 2023.

there are always events, manager meetings, get-togethers and awards for employees and managers to attend.

the company really listens to its employees and helps them massively to achieve the best they can be.

there is the issue of staff shortages (especially in the northwest) and very female-dominated industry, but the teams treat everyone like one of the family. 

H&T pawnbrokers is one of the UKs biggest pawnbrokers with over 190 branches nationwide and no 2 days are exactly the same. You may find yourself meeting & greeting customers on the shop floor assisting them with their queries or evaluating their gold, diamonds or prestige watches. H&T offer a wide variety of services including retail which is great if you have that passion to deliver great customer service. 
You get to work with a great bunch of people from all different backgrounds and the management is very encouraging and supportive to help new people progress within the company. This is great as there is room for promotion and in house training is provided including jewellery and gems courses.
This job is only as difficult as you make it as all training is consistently provided instore and off site. The best part of this job is seeing the vast amounts of different kinds of jewellery customers own from antique brooches to large diamond rings.

I have worked for them for a short while and only had bad experiences. Other than product discount there is nothing else that benefits employees, long hours, stay overtime for no pay, salary very low for the amount of work and responsibilities constant remarks from management including area manager
Company makes millions every year and still have to pay from your own pocket if the tills have discrepancy which sometimes is not your fault.
They did not pay me for the last 3 weeks of my service.
Manager was late every day at least 15 minutes,once I had to wait for him 1,5 hours in cold .He set up a meeting with me when I was late 5 minutes on 2 occasions.
They sacked one girl and openly been laughing about it with another manager visiting from a different branch.
Never felt like I was given enough training, generally bad experience

when I first started at H&T Pawnbrokers, it was the best place to work, everyone loved going to work, making friends and great fundays, every Christmas the company would pay for all staff members to have a party and it was fantastic! but slowing as the years went on.. the company CEO and Directors would be hard on staff, always wanting more and moving to goal post way too far, and giving unrealistic targets, that when everything started to change. staff were getting tired. I used to leave work at 10PM at times, no thanks for staying late to get things done. It got to the point where I ended up in hospital because I just focused on work and not on myself. That's when I realised I needed to change the way I worked. Working for the company for nearly 8 years was great but getting too much.

If the area manager fancies you, you’ll be fine.

Unrealistic expectations with no support, the bullying and harassment culture and the unfair treatment of customers.

Overall the company values its profit over the wellbeing of staff. Deputy managers are paid slightly more than sales associates and managers are expected to bully teams

Extreme pressure when you’re forced to lone work, don’t expect support from the area managers who are too busy being childish and underhanded towards employees

Management are shocking!!!! They literally can do what they want but a soon as your late by a couple of minutes your getting a warning , I was good in my role good with customers and sales but because I opened my mouth and had an actual input about the unfair management they don’t like it so if your willing to keep shut you may last longer then me! All you are is a puppet on a string to them,multi million pound business yes ...but if you polish the area managers shoes and be a lap dog your whole family will have a job here and that is exactly what happens there is set people in there that will wait for you to be 2 mins late because there daughter has been offered your hours and contract without you knowing then you will get the sack and guess who will have your job ? I wouldn’t waste your time or energy here!

Very interesting job and a day is never the same,  you learning about gold and your brain keeping exercises as you do a lots of different tasks on a daily basis

Poor management at the stores and area managers , going to cover stores in a different locations,

Pressure  all the time , stressful and never got to leave on time , everyday you work between half an hour or more without being paid
