Hostelling-Scotland

Company gives the oppourtunity to live in the most beautifull locations in Scotland. I have met amazing people too. And I'm afraid that's all the positives. 
First-lack of Staff. Constant. I was working way more than contract says. On the beggining of season it was so much stuff to do to prepare for opening-and everything last minute. So no time for it, not enough Staff, and work under preasurre of opening. Durning the season - things were breaking in the hostel very often, and it takes ages to fix them.That obviously affect our work. We are the face in the hostel who needs to tell guests:no hot water, no washing today, etc) 
Staff accomodation was in terrible condition(which shows lack of respect for staff again). 
This is a shame becouse it could be a great company for work. If they would start to care about staff I'm sure lot of people would be happy to come back for another seasons. But we felt that the only things they care is money. 
I do not reccomend Hostelling Scotland as an employer. 

Working for Hostelling Scotland is definitely an experience that I would recommend to anyone. There are so many amazing people in the company and you meet so many people on a daily basis. Working in hostels isn’t a job it’s a lifestyle. It can sometimes be a lot to deal with but if you like a challenge and a job where no 2 days are the same then I would say go for it- what do you have to lose? You also have the opportunity to stay at other hostels at a discounted rate so you can see as much of Scotland as you want. 
The wage is good and you also have the opportunity to live on site (what’s to complain about) 
The social side that comes along with the job is something you don’t get else where- you work together and live together and you can make amazing friendships. 
There are a lot of changes they are happening and the company is always looking to make changes to show their staff how much they appreciate them.



Not my first assistant managers role but very much the stepping stone I was looking for. Training was excellent, visited head office in Stirling and was able to meet all the relevant members of staff including the CEO. 
Training days with other site managers provided an interesting insight into the business as well as worthwhile training. 
Overall it gave me valuable knowledge to take the next step up the ladder in a fast moving sector, would be very proud to return one day and work for them again.

Company is run like it’s still the 1970’s. upper management have very little lateral thinking and seem to be in fear of making decisions that would push the business/company forward. It seems they have ‘lost’ the Hostelling feel to the some of the locations and are trying to be ‘trendy hotels’. They’ve lost the character and feel and are just another  cheaper alternative accommodation without the service and frills. Shame. 

Room cleaning on a day shift was a full on and sweaty hot process. Bedroom cleaning during a day shift was low quality due to low staff levels and fast pace. A cleaning day shift really beat you down because the building is so warm. 
The best part of working here are the morning and evening shifts,  pre and post bedroom cleaning.

Not secure job. Unless your happy going from one hostell to another. As this job the company decide where you work, not always the place you go for your interview. 

I have feeling that company is not interested in having long relationship with workers. Sometimes I have feeling that management in head office is not aware how work in hostels look like. Not much support from head office. Great for young people who want to start work in hospitality.
Plus - possible accommodation at hostels.

Don't even bother, management are useless.
I don't think this company knows  how to handle staff as management are hopeless. The guests know that there are much better hostel companies out there, and independent hostels are definitely the way forward. 


Great management, always felt supported and respected. They always assisted whenever I had any questions and helped me build up my confidence within areas I was apprehensive about. Fair pay, good hours, friendly staff.

Old style running business, charity registered. Good network but management sitting in head office is clueless about real situation. Operations is quite strict but managers are polite.
