I worked for the Manchester Resettlement team for four months and the best part of working in the Manchester project as a whole was the people. Both the accommodation and resettlement staff are all extremely compassionate, conscientious, knowledgeable, and helpful. The management team is the most understanding and supportive I have encountered, with each member of the management team bringing a different approach to the work environment, and they each are available to all staff for advice from their different experiences and perspectives which is thoroughly valuable. The work itself can at times be difficult emotionally or stressful which is why it is so fantastic to have such a caring team. Lots of holiday days are offered and it is easy to take time off when needed, and management is very accommodating for flexible working with TOIL etc. which is another big plus. Though the salary pay-scales are a bit low, keep in mind this is a charity and working for a company that truly helps people and communities is its own reward.
Even though I worked here for a short time, I learned so much so quickly about areas I initially had very limited knowledge on and was nervous to figure out (primarily housing and benefits issues). This is thanks to all staff being available to answer questions, take me with them on client visits, let me sit in on groups, and getting lots of hands-on experience right off the bat when starting my role. Though working in resettlement ultimately wasn't quite right for me and my career plan, I am very appreciative of the time I spent here and again very thankful to the staff for being so lovely.

The service is run like a dictatorship - senior managers just constantly on the backs of frontline staff and they do nothing but make you feel overworked and unappreciated.

So many people in tears at work regularly, going off sick, leaving, or basically being forced out or even sacked if they dare to argue or complain about the unbearable atmosphere and working conditions. Constantly feels like walking on egg shells and managers will ruthlessly come down on you for trivial stuff while they’re not coming up with solutions or processes for basic systemic failings… 

Could’ve been a good service and had high hopes but the way it’s been managed will run all of the decent staff out and the service itself into the ground. I feel for the service users because I don’t see how anyone who knows anything about the place (and unfortunately most other organisations barely know anything!) recommend it to anyone and expect them to get better with what’s being offered at the moment.

It should’ve been a time of optimism with new organisation and money in services again, but the clowns in charge have made it worse than ever and constantly get in the way of anyone being able to do their job the way it needs to be done. If you want to keep any passion for substance misuse work, or work in a supportive and professional environment then I’d advise you run a mile from Humankind! 

Unprofessional in every way especially support of clients. Only interested in winning contracts and paying workers an extremely low wage. No recognition of qualifications or experience within the employees. Extremely dangerous environment to work in for clients and staff as caseloads are ridiculous and unable to have a full control on clients. None caring attitude towards clients and staff. Yes culture. This organization do not know how to treat people at all. Huge sickness level with staff as the job is totally stressful, and
 no cover arranged. When staff leave they are never replaced. You are not treat as a person you are a robot. Staff are placed in a totally vulnerable position on a daily basis and not support is offered. Never applauded for positive work.
The name Humankind does not in any way reflect the way the company is run. Cold, heartless and ruthless within there HR and management team. 
I would strongly not recommend working for this organization if you care for yourself and especially clients as they certainly do not care for either. 
Most definitely the worst employer I have ever had the misfortune of working for and have been in contact with many more people who have the same opinion. 
Stay well away something better will come.

As a student on placement, you will experience a holistic approach to treatment, addressing physical, psychological, social, and environmental factors. This will give you a well-rounded understanding of the complexities of addiction and recovery.

During your placement, you’ll work alongside experienced professionals, including counselors and healthcare providers. This will enhance your practical skills, such as conducting assessments and developing treatment plans. You’ll also have direct interaction with clients, supporting them through their recovery journey. This hands-on experience will improve your communication and empathy skills.

The service also offers educational workshops that focus on the latest research and best practices in addiction treatment. Attending these sessions will keep you informed about current trends and innovations, enriching your knowledge and practical experience. The team at Reach fosters a supportive and inclusive environment, promoting collaboration, respect, and continuous learning.

There are many different teams to work within, some are harder than others, and generally the pay provided does not fairly cover all the responsibilities expected of us. Adding to this very few opportunities for pay rises, without any support from managers to improve this, and it feels like running on a hamster wheel. Management is poor and often leads to baffling decisions that seem to exist only to inconvenience the workers as changes are clearly made by people who are not affected by these changes, or else they might think twice. 
Staff are not respected by management, with some workers being let go as they're "no longer needed" before being asked back after other staff decide to leave due to poor conditions. 
While it is hugely important to prioritise the service users and their needs, management seldom balances these needs with the needs of staff and often allow service users to walk all over the service and the workers which generally reduces quality of life for those who are affected by this without much entrenched support. 
At least the boots-on-the-ground workers in the office make humankind somewhat tolerable.

When I first started it was a great and varied role. Over my 2 years there management drove everyone out with there non sympathetic and old fashioned thinking. 

Completely unsupportive in any type of flexible working saying its either our way or the high way. No support for new staff. Being made to work commercially which totally goes against thier own values.
Really low wages and was told it is in line with current market average which wasn't true. Half the team were on stress leave before they eventually left.

No concern for employee wellbeing or mental health. Gas lighting staff saying covering 2 peoples role is acceptable and to get on with it. Made to do admin work and no upskilling or development opportunities. Very chaotic working styles where you're working on queries which have been dealt by staff years ago but not getting logged correctly. Incompetent other departments who are difficult to work with.

Worked for this company. So unprofessional. Management have no idea about providing a quality IAG Service, People with skills and experience are ignored and unsupported. Resources kept to a minimum, Was left without a printer for 3 months whilst they sourced the cheapest . Other staff utterly unprofessional in their dealing with the public as witnessed. Management don't respond, they don't like experienced staff questioning policy or strategy more concerned if you leave to see a client as to why you haven't returned at a particular time. Confidentiality not adhered to, interviews going on in the presence of others. No autonomy, people promoted beyond their experience and skills, no encouragement to achieve which highlights a company more targeted towards making money than conducting and providing a service. Pay rate pathetic for people with IAG experience there are no increments, keeping you on the same pay rate for the contract duration, holidays minimum and trying to claim expenses made as difficult as possible. The only person making a decent living is the CEO 
Avoid

The company invest in their employees with lots of in-house training. However, it feels like a bit of a minefield when you first start working here. Recovery coordinators are certainly overworked and underpaid. There is an element of job satisfaction for those clients who do appreciate the work you do with them. Not every service is the same within humankind and I have recently left after moving services due to relocation. And sadly it was not the same experience for me from one place to the next. Management have been great throughout my time working here. And although I personally haven’t always agreed with the politics of the company I would recommend someone who is looking to gain experience and qualifications to consider this type of employment because it has made my resume look more appealing. The staff turnover is shocking which I believe is due to the rates of pay. Don’t be led in to a false sense of security by being promised a pay rise because this simply isn’t the case and is exactly what happened to me.

Worried here for just ten months. Staff are shockingly overworked with high risk and out of proportion workloads. There is a mass of complexity managing the client base and the stress is showing in most of the staff. Sickness is high and salaries are not proportionate or realistic to match the emotional and mental stresses that come with working here. The attitude of Senior managers is that you need to "believe in the cause to work here and the pay should not be a driving factor." 
Two managers exited at the same time and six members of my team were in the process of moving to other employment owing to poor pay and high workloads. 

That said flexible working is encouraged and if there had been a present competent Service Manger in my department this may have been a better place to work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Dealing with management /senior company executives who don’t seem to be aware or care about clients and their issues. High case loads. Lack of clear communication from management regarding targets to meet, expected outcomes or support to reach these. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic. 
No clear management. Senior management such as regional directors have no compassion or empathy for clients.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A farce
No one knows what they’re doing with their day and workers are pulled routinely from their normal duties to manage crisis caused by bad management and lack of company infrastructure
