There is no typical day as a Support Practitioner at Partners for Inclusion, that is the beauty of the role! My day started with a handover from another member of my team and the next 24 hours was an adventure! 

Your day looks like how the person you support wants it to. Some days that can be a trip to a theatre, cinema, bowling, shopping or horse riding; other days can be laidback movie days or even the dreaded housework! The role is what you make it. 

This was my first support practitioner job and I feel that I have learned how to be a good support practitioner. I had transferable skills to begin with but the culture and training within the PFI office allowed me to develop the confidence to thrive in my role. In a short time I developed and perfected a number of new skills that I will now have for life. 

The PFI office in Kilmarnock is a welcoming hub where you are always welcome to seek support. I had a very knowledgeable and supportive manager who I felt I could always approach for help and advice. 

The hardest part of the job for me was unexpected. Having lone worked before I thought I would be confident doing so. However, 24 hours yourself is a long time without a colleague to reflect on your practice with. There were times throughout my shifts where if I had been working alongside a colleague I would have asked for their advice or opinions but when lone working you don’t have that luxury. However, your Service Leader or the On-Call Team are always at the other end of the phone for support and guidance. 

Additionally, as a new practitioner coming in with fresh ideas, some good, some probably rubbish, I did feel some resistance from long-established staff. Understandably, they probably thought, if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix  it. There are always opportunities to share your ideas for improvement with the entire team at team meetings and planning days. I found that when good ideas were put forward my Service Leader would always support the team to make sure that the person we supported could experience that outing or activity. 

Undoubtedly, the best part of the role was supporting the kindest, happiest, most enthusiastic woman that I have ever met. The feeling of supporting her to go somewhere or do something that she really enjoyed, where she had the best time, was amazing. Having an idea and saying ‘I don’t know if you’ll like this, but will be give it a try?’ and when we tried whatever it was and she loved it? That feeling is priceless. 

I would advise anyone considering a Support Practitioner role with Partners for Inclusion to give it a go. I don’t think you will regret it. 




Worked part time for PFI for 7 years. I had a great and very supportive manager. Who understood working around childcare etc. Very rewarding job, met so many lovely service users who I was sad to leave behind however due to looking for FT work I changed role. 

Pros: People you support and team staff.
Good training. An ok place to work if you only want to work part time zero hours contract.

Cons:  Have to work over various teams to make up full time hours. Very few full time jobs available.
