What is the best part of working at the company?
I loved working at RAND Europe, a lovely non-profit organisation that seriously helps the world in all aspects of human condition with their research. The people you will be working with are lovely people and also very smart people as majority of them have PhDs. Flexible hybrid working hours, brand new office near Botanic gardens with a super fun office manager, free parking (but not far from Cambridge Train station if you commute by train. The organisation has a great culture that is very diverse and inclusive. I would call it an ideal job if it was permanent, but it wasn’t the right time for me till they expand. You won’t regret working there.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There were no-stressful parts really. Sometime the workload was high at the end of financial year but manageable. The only thing I disliked doing there were half yearly and yearly performance reviews as I would much rather do my actual job 🙂 but this is an admin part of any job and not RAND specific  so can’t be avoided as it helps you and others to improve  🙂

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Amazing, a fabulous brand new office not far from Cambridge Station and the culture is all inclusive and very diverse. The companies values: Quality, Objectivity, Collaboration, Service and Learning are true and followed. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I come into the office, get set up at my desk and say hello to whomever is there  that day.  You don’t get a permanent desk and parking, you need to book them in advance  as it’s a hybrid working environment. I do my work, talk to a lot of people during the day, either via email, Teams or in person. I might have meetings pre-arranged or walk over to my colleagues desks to discuss things if needed. Go and get my hot chocolate, fruit or biscuits if I like. Have a quick chat in the kitchen/dining area with whoever is there. Then back to work. I usually eat my lunch at my desk as I don’t take a lunch  break due to being part time employee so can get home quicker. But full time employees have their 1h lunch  break. There isn’t a canteen as such to buy food, but if you like there is a catering van on site or can take a short walk to a shop or a self-serving fridge with sandwiches you can pay for  . Most people bring their lunch to the office which saves money to be honest.
At monthly meetings if you are in the office company supplies lunch for everyone. RAND does family days, team fun days, Christmas parties etc. 
when I work from home it’s pretty much the same with a difference of walking to my kitchen and doing all the meetings and chats virtually. The core hours at RAND are 8-6pm so as long as you work your hours in this period, it’s all good. RAND is very flexible around family, so when I’m working form home, I can get up and get my kids from school then resume working. When I have an appointment, I either work longer before that day, knowing that I will have to take a time off for my appointment or if there is an unplanned appointment, you can make up for your hours another day.

A lot of really friendly, smart and compassionate people work here. You get to contribute really hands on to the research being conducted, and have a lot of freedom to choose what projects you work on. The backside to this freedom is that it is really hard to work out how much work you can take on, which makes it easy to be overloaded. Some people manage this better than others.

You'll meet a lot of interesting, clever people. Unfortunately management lacks vision and they have no compunction about lying to teams and letting loyal staff go without warning

Brilliant workplace! Great people and great training, sets you in good steed for the rest of your career. The organisation gives you plenty of opportunity to develop your skills.
