Right-At-Home---Isle-of-Wight

After 25 years working in the childcare sector, which I enjoyed, I felt I needed a change.  I joined Right at Home in Bournemouth to be a caregiver in the community and I have never looked back. It was daunting at first, learning new skills, meeting new people in their homes, but with Right at Home’s thorough training, supportive staff and excellent management team, three years on, I still love my job.  

Most people take a lot of things for granted such as getting out of bed, having a shower, getting dressed, cooking a meal or going for a walk. However, there are many people out there in the community who can’t do these things due to being either elderly, having an illness or having a disability.  In my role as a caregiver, I support these people to live independently, meet their care needs and help to enrich their lives as much as possible.

On occasions the job can be demanding, but if you like a challenge the rewards make it all worthwhile.  It’s the reason why I continue working as a caregiver.  There are so many daily rewards such as helping the clients to be independent, being a listening ear, sharing special moments like looking at old photographs and generally making a difference to their lives.  Seeing the clients smile, my heart sings.

​It’s a win win situation for me.  Not only am I enjoying my work and developing a new career at the age of 54, but I have just embarked on a Level 3 Health & Social Care Diploma, something I thought I would never do at this time in my life.  My manager recognised my prior work skills and I am now putting these skills into practice by becoming involved in their training programme.  Its exciting times for me and feel lucky to work with such a supportive company.  

Whether you want to work full-time or part-time, Right at Home are definitely a fabulous company to work for and offer good rates of pay as well as training and opportunities to progress in your career.

I have returned to caring after thirty years. 
I’m no spring chicken and had lots of uncertainty and anxieties . I had been acutely aware of the unjust lack of status of the care industry pre covid and the  poor  attitude of firms who rate profits over people. However at Right at Home Solent visits  are a minimum of an hour , employees are valued  with training, support,  mileage allownce and competitive wages. From what I have seen to date  in practice clients and staff are valued and supported through all aspects of care providing and  training. 
When I met the Managing Directors  of Right at home Solent  I left my interview feeling positive and excited about working for them. I really felt that standards matter and that they champion the best interests of the clients.  I feel that all the Management Team at right at home aim for this balance . I have only worked for right at home for a month and I feel part of something more than just another care provider. I feel inspired . I’m really enjoying it.
I am still in my shadowing phase and out with other carers  meeting clients and delivering care. As a returner with dated  skills and techniques I feel supported with my return. The three day training/ induction  was fun and very informative. We covered lots of practical topics and had time to air our own concerns and fears.  
I was on this  course with experienced carers  and  trainers and was able to learn from them all over the three day process for which I was paid and fed!!
I have felt challenged, it’s not all plain sailing , I’m on a learning curve and there is a lot to learn but I know that the environment that has been created at right at home will help me become an effective safe carer. 
If you are thinking about returning to care , entering for the first time or been doing it for years I give it my highest recommendation and urge you to give them a call or submit an application. 


Good company overall, yes slight issues as mentioned in other reviews but what company doesn't have issues?? If you expect to only work 9-5pm then expect to only have work at lunch time because realistically, clients need care first thing in the morning, at lunch, at dinner time and after 7pm for bed assistance. Those who comment that they didn't get hours...it's likely they weren't available to work during the most popular times so what do they expect?
Good pay in line with most care agencies, yes holiday is accrued into a 'pot' which you don't 'apply for', you can take out in any monthly pay slip to pay you during annual leave or you can save it until the end of the year and take it all at once! 
Training is very thorough and regular. 
Carers work well together, managers are very supportive and take issues to the directors. 
Pay is based on care experience so jobs will advertise from lowest level to highest.
Opportunity to do health and social care diplomas.
Due to the nature of the care industry, it is unpredictable in nature with clients passing away or going into nursing homes so you need to be prepared for that but if you are a true carer by nature, the job satisfaction from seeing the joy on your clients faces and the happiness they share with you when having a good visit far outweighs any issues you may have with anything. 
We have regular team meetings, team socials with a senior carer, company events such as an annual carer/client BBQ, a monthly prize draw for those who pick up extra care calls including big cash prizes! Over the time I've worked for them they've given little gifts of thanks to us over the year. 
They really put thought into saying thanks to the carers for their dedication. 
Clients get a minimum of one hour because we believe in creating time for our clients to get to know them so they feel as comfortable in their own homes as possible, no flyby 10/15 min visits here! 
Give them a try, you have to find the company that suits you. 

Whilst the patients and other carers were mostly very enjoyable to work with, I have to say that the job, as a whole, was extremely disappointing. I was told so many conflicting things about my salary, hours and commitments, I’m still not sure which information was correct. My shifts were constantly changed, I received up to 12 calls per day asking me to switch and pick things up, which would then be changed again shortly after. I was sold the idea of working certain shift patterns and lengths, being told they were plentiful, then told later on that this wasn’t the case. I asked for the pattern I was promised, and immediately had all shifts taken off me, and when I called up to ask for some work I was told I would receive a call back… I had to call 3 times that day and still nobody called me back. I feel like I was lied to, disrespected, and pushed aside on so many occasions, and nobody seemed to care. Carers were also often late to appointments, and I was not allowed to enter the properties without another carer there on double-up shifts, which on a few occasions left me waiting for up to an hour and meant I finished work extremely late.

On the plus side, I was able to start quickly, and was told I had the job within an hour of interviewing, but I now realise why I was told never to take a position that was offered so quickly. The only reason for offering so quickly is a high staff turnover, which usually means low job satisfaction, and I have learned my lesson on this occasion.

I was also offered additional training, which was nice, though without mentioning specifics, I feel I was misled in that regard too.

For the right person, this could be a fantastic job, but the salary and constant disruption, plus the lack of respect and phone calls during sleep, simply could not work for me.

Interview process is quick and professional, however DBS checks can take a while.

Mostly lone working depending on the role but regular team meetings and always an open door at the office to discuss anything and relax.

Hardest part of the job is losing any clients as you form a bond with them.
Most enjoyable part of the job is meeting many different kinds of people and enabling them to live a fulfilling life, it's a very sociable job and sometimes doesn't even feel like you're at work! 
The role requires a lot of learning and a kind heart, anyone with those attributes would fit in to the team wonderfully. 
Each day is different. You could see clients whos age ranges from 30 - 100! All clients have different needs. One day you could be administering medication and assisting clients to shower, the next you could be taking clients to the gym or for a cup of tea at a local cafe. You build a lovely rapport with your regular clients and the company has very high standards of care giving. 

I have worked at Right at Home for a year after never having worked in the care sector before and they really are an exceptional company to work for and belong to. They truly care about providing outstanding care to their clients and ensuring all employees feel supported and have the knowledge to do so. They really encourage the building of positive relationships between their clients and caregivers and try their best to ensure that you work with a small selection of clients so that you really get to know the clients' needs and personality. Going into the social care sector can be daunting but Right at Home make the process extremely smooth and provide you with the knowledge and support you need in order to provide brilliant care to the clients. They will support you with training and shadowing to make sure you feel fully confident and comfortable prior to working alone. On top of this, they also ensure you are introduced to your clients alongside other members of staff who know the client well to make sure that you and the client are comfortable with one another. I find all management staff to be helpful and understanding and they're always at the end of a phonecall if you need help with something. Providing domiciliary care is not always an easy job as there is a lot of responsibility involved, but with Right at Home, you always feel like you are making a positive difference to clients' lives and that you are supported by the management team in your day-to-day work. The management team are also very accommodating to your needs as an employee and there is flexibility in regards to shifts/hours if needed. If you are someone who is caring by nature, you could not find a better employer in the care sector to work for; you will be proud to work for them!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Work on a 2 week rolling rota that doesn't matter because last min night before, even when ypu are working on specific day constantly being told over refresh rotas meaning adding more calls or changing full runs very stressful job as it is never mind actually not knowing what you are working from 1 min to another 
They also don't have alot of flexibility happy to ask to work ya days off but can't ask for swapped shifts if you have any unpredictable issues such as GP apps or child care as they tell you no its not your avalibility you told us at induction u can work

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very stressful no time to get from 1 clients to another 
Co codinators need help with getting runs correct often you are sent from 1 area to another 15min 20mins away do 1 client to have to go back where u have just been routine planning needs attention that travel time makes a massive difference when u have 18 or so clients in a full day 
Also gabs in rotas so out at 7am in morning for two 1 hr calls then nothing for an hr then another client after that you are not getting paid for that gap so you could be out in morning for 7/8 hrs but only get paid for 5/6hrs of work for example.when ever it's complained about you are told that your avaliblitity you can go home cuz it's a 20min travel home 20 back so sitting in your car wasting time waiting around for your next client on rotas

What is a typical day like for you at the company?

Unfortunately right at home Bristol is a franchise of the right at home national company. This means that while they have to follow certain paths from the national company, it's day to day running is overseen by an owner with little knowledge of the care industry.
Despite claims of wanting expand the business, the owner fails to invest in secondary offices so to give a base for recruitment in other areas of the city.
Constant office staff job title changes & roles means there is little coordination or consistency in the approach or implementation of anything.
While there are & were good individuals throughout the business many of those seem to leave as quickly as they arrive.
There is little consideration for staff work life balance & there are clearly favourites & cliques. Certain members pf staff have to much power for their rolls & appear to have the eue of the owner making the registered manager a ceremonial position to fulfil compliance. Good staff leave due to feeling under apprietated or just hounded out. A clear power struggle in the office has seen several good staff leave.
There are no carer progression opportunities due to the company always recruiting from outside & not looking to promote from with in.
The business has potential to be good but poor leadership & a tendency to number crunch by the owner prevents growth.
I continue to work here as it suits me & my needs, but I'd say to those who are giving up secure employment to avoid this company, it's only good for those who want to get back into employment & use it as a short term stepping stone to add to a CV.

I've been working for Right at Home Swansea for three years. I started off with absolutely no experience in the care sector but when I started, I was put on to double staffed calls where I had a experienced partner who supported me in the first few months. This then allowed me to build up my confidence to handle single staffed calls. 

I now have my own run with continuity and regular clients who I visit on my available working days. This works so well and gives me a real work life balance. I get plenty of rest time as well as 28 days paid holiday a year which is helpful towards my mental wellbeing. 
Unfortunately, some people do not see the care sector as a real career opportunity, but I have to say since I left my office job, for the first time ever, I now believe I’ve found the right career for me.

There are so many different directions I can go within the Health Care sector, whether that it's nursing, occupational therapist or even a social worker but for me I just love being a care worker, looking after my client’s needs. 

I’m feel so supported when it comes to additional training, whether its Health and Social care NVQ 2,3 or 5 or to pursue the academic degree route, the management support, guide and encourage me to continue my personal development.

Right at Home has supported me every step of the way even when I had some difficult home issues, nothing was a problem, they were so accommodating and ultimately stepped up like an additional family member for me.
 Had it not been for that support I honestly do not know what would have happened or where I would be now. However, the support was there it was never in doubt and now those problems are in the past and I can come to work every day without any worries. I am a valued member of the Right at Home team. 


I worked for Birmingham brach. The coordinator wants have everything under control, if an unexpected situation occurs in your life, it makes you feel guilty.  Owner does not want to be disturbed, there are problems they have, different ways to manage. The coordinator  wants to be called and if the client has pas a wind, owner ( she is the manager) prefers not to bother her with anything.  If you want to complain about something and you have a discussion with the manager which is the owner, you're scheduled to meet her after three days.  During this time the coordinator and the manager  scratch in all your notes to find bugs, or has some bugs that they did not notice you but they kept for “the right time”, kept them there if you want to complain about something, if you complain about something they will throw them  in front of you.  Something like, 'Shut your mouth, look what we have for you.'  There is no organizational culture.  Sorry, there is one, your colleague is your enemy, he wants to take your hours and clients.  We had no meeting with colleagues to meet us.  The feeling is inspire by the office is like, we suspect everyone is doing something you should not have done.  When I announced that I was leaving, of course 30 days before, I had hours of a bank holiday, which is known to be better paid.  They sent me mail that the clients canceled the visits. Of course they did not cancel it, I checked in the notes clients and I saw that all the clients they said thay dit not. I read the colleagues' notes of that day and I asked the clients, in a subtle way,  they honestly said they did not cancel a visit and that my colleague replaced me.  Discrimination on the face. Not a nice place to work, few clients, not enough time between clients. The clients are very nice this is the only good thing.
