Role Overview:
We are looking for two enthusiastic engineering apprentices to join our expert Cranes & Lifting team at Teesside as Crane Service Engineer Apprentices, completing a Mechatronics Engineering Apprenticeship in collaboration with Middlesbrough College.
Working alongside experienced engineers, you will develop practical electrical and mechanical engineering skills while learning to inspect, service, maintain and repair overhead cranes and lifting equipment across a wide range of customer sites and industries.
This is a hands-on opportunity to begin a career in a safety-focused, high-demand engineering environment, with structured workplace development and additional accredited training provided throughout your apprenticeship.
Key Responsibilities of Role:
Engineering and Practical Learning
- Travel to customer sites with qualified Crane Service Engineers and support planned maintenance and breakdown activities.
- Assist with the inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair of overhead cranes, hoists and lifting equipment.
- Develop practical fault-finding skills across electrical and mechanical systems, including motors, drives, control circuits and gearboxes.
- Learn how crane components and systems operate and how faults can be identified, investigated and safely rectified.
Safety, Compliance and Quality
- Develop safe working practices for working with heavy equipment, at height and in challenging industrial environments.
- Learn to identify safety and compliance issues during inspections and servicing activities.
- Support safe slinging, lifting and crane operating activities under appropriate supervision.
- Follow company procedures, customer site rules and relevant health and safety requirements at all times.
- Build an understanding of LOLER, service requirements and the importance of accurate inspection and maintenance records.
Customer Service and Documentation
- Support engineers in providing a professional and responsive service to customers.
- Learn to complete clear and accurate service reports, timesheets and compliance documentation.
- Develop confidence communicating with customers about work being undertaken and any issues identified.
Technical Development
- Build knowledge across electrical systems including control circuits, electrical drawings, inverters, limits, motors, power circuits and radio control.
- Develop mechanical knowledge including brakes, chains, couplings, gearboxes, ropes, sheaves, wheels, bearings and crane structures.
- Gain exposure to hydraulics, pneumatics, installations, servicing, tackle inspection and other core crane engineering processes.
Day to Day Tasks:
- Travelling to customer sites within the region with qualified engineers.
- Assisting with planned inspections, servicing and maintenance of cranes and lifting equipment.
- Supporting diagnosis and repair of electrical systems, motors, drives, control equipment and gearboxes.
- Helping to identify worn, damaged or non-compliant components and supporting appropriate repairs or replacements.
- Learning to use engineering tools and equipment safely and correctly.
- Supporting breakdown response and helping engineers minimise customer downtime.
- Learning safe working at height, harness use, slinging and lifting practices.
- Recording work completed and supporting accurate service and compliance documentation.
- Developing customer communication skills while working professionally on customer sites.

Qualifications and Eligibility:
- Maths GCSE Grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent.
- English GCSE Grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent.
Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old at the start of the apprenticeship due to the nature of the role, including work with heavy equipment, at height and in potentially hazardous environments.

Progression:
- On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there is potential to progress in to a full-time Crane Service Engineer role.
