A Better Long-Term Home for an Experienced Heating Engineer
Not every career move has to be about chasing the highest advertised basic salary.
Sometimes it’s about joining a stable, well-run company where you enjoy coming to work, have good people around you, know there is plenty of work ahead and can see opportunities to progress your career.
That’s what we’re trying to offer at O’Neil.
We’ve been in business for more than 30 years, have over 7,000 O’Neil Care members and install more than 400 boilers every year.
We’re now looking for an experienced Heating Engineer to strengthen our installation team as we continue growing our private boiler business.
Why Consider O’Neil?
We know good Heating Engineers have options.
You may already have a job. You may be self-employed. You might not even be actively looking.
But if you’d consider moving for the right company rather than simply the highest basic salary, we’d like to have a conversation.
At O’Neil, we’re building a business where experienced engineers can have:
- Secure, permanent employment
- Consistent work throughout the year
- An organised and supportive working environment
- Planned private installations rather than contract or social-housing work
- Good office and management support
- Regular overtime and additional earning opportunities
- Training and development
- Opportunities to move into specialist and higher-paid roles
- A company with a strong local reputation and over 30 years behind it
- A friendly team and good working atmosphere
- Long-term career opportunities as the business continues to grow
We want O’Neil to be somewhere good engineers want to stay.
Focus on Engineering – We’ll Handle the Rest
If you’re self-employed, you’ll know that being a good engineer is only half the job.
Finding work, pricing jobs, arranging materials, dealing with customers, paperwork, cancellations, chasing money and keeping the diary full all take time.
At O’Neil, we find the customers, generate the enquiries, sell the installations, arrange the diary and provide the support.
You can concentrate on what you’re good at — installing heating systems properly and looking after customers.
And if you’re currently employed somewhere that feels disorganised, overly pressured or offers limited opportunities to progress, O’Neil may offer you a different type of working environment.
Plenty of Work Ahead
We currently install more than 400 gas boilers each year, with plans to increase our installation volumes further.
Our installations are for private homeowners rather than social-housing installation contracts, allowing us to concentrate on quality workmanship and customer service.
The wider O’Neil Gas business also completes more than 15,000 jobs annually, supported by more than 7,000 O’Neil Care members.
That provides something increasingly important in the trade:
long-term stability and a reliable pipeline of work.
The Role
You’ll be an experienced Heating Engineer capable of completing domestic boiler installations independently from start to finish.
Work will include:
- Combi boiler installations
- Heat-only and system boilers
- Boiler conversions
- System upgrades
- Full heating systems
- Radiators and heating controls
- Commissioning and fault-finding
- Working directly with private homeowners
Experience in servicing, repairs and general plumbing is also useful and gives us greater flexibility to provide you with a varied workload.
Earnings & Salary Progression
The starting basic salary is £31,000–£34,000, depending on experience and ability.
With overtime, incentives and bonuses, there is the opportunity to earn £40,000+.
Importantly, we don’t necessarily see your starting salary as where your earnings should remain.
We’ll carry out a formal performance and salary review after approximately six months. Engineers who demonstrate additional skills, responsibility, productivity and value to the business should have opportunities to progress financially.
Where Could the Job Take You?
We don’t want experienced engineers to feel they’ve reached the end of their career development simply because they can already install boilers.
O’Neil continues to invest in new areas of the business, creating opportunities for engineers interested in developing into:
- Commercial gas
- Air conditioning
- Heat pumps and renewables
- Battery storage
- Smart heating technology
- Technical and specialist roles
- Supervisory and management positions
We have our own training facilities at our Ayr head office and support engineers through internal development, CPD and paid external training.
Our aim is that joining O’Neil improves both your working life now and your career prospects for the future.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced engineer who can confidently complete boiler installations without supervision.
You’ll need:
- Significant post-qualification experience
- Strong domestic boiler installation experience
- Current Gas Safe qualifications
- CCN1
- CENWAT or CEN1
- CPA1
- CKR1
- HTR1
- SVQ Level 3 or equivalent
- Full UK driving licence
- Own hand tools
- Good customer communication skills
- Reliability and a professional attitude
- Pride in the quality of your work
Above all, we’re looking for someone who enjoys being an engineer, gets on well with other people and wants to be part of a good team.
You Don’t Need to Be Actively Job Hunting
Some of the best engineers aren’t searching Indeed every day.
So if you’re reasonably happy where you are but wonder whether O’Neil could offer you a better working environment, greater stability or better long-term career opportunities, we’d still like to hear from you.
There’s no pressure and no obligation to apply.
You don’t even need to send us a CV initially.
Call us on for a private, informal conversation about the position, or apply through Indeed and we’ll get in touch.
A ten-minute conversation could be all it takes to find out whether O’Neil would be a better fit for you.
