Aquajets Newcastle is looking for enthusiastic and reliable individuals to join our coaching and teaching team.
We are recruiting for two areas within the club:
- Junior Development Swimming Coach
- Swimming Teacher
We are open to appointing one person who can work across both areas or several individuals who are suited to either coaching or teaching. Applicants are therefore encouraged to apply whether they are interested in one role or both.
About Aquajets Newcastle
Aquajets is a well-established swimming club based in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. We provide a comprehensive pathway for swimmers, from their first swimming lessons through development and competitive swimming to county, regional and national level.
Our aim is to create a positive, challenging and supportive environment in which swimmers can enjoy the sport, develop their skills and work towards their individual potential.
Sessions take place at:
- Sport Central, Northumbria University, NE1 8ST
- Royal Grammar School, Jesmond, NE2 4DX
Junior Development Coach
The Junior Development Coach will work with swimmers in the early stages of their competitive swimming journey, helping them build the technical skills, confidence and training habits required to progress through the club.
The role would suit an enthusiastic swimming coach or experienced swimming teacher who is interested in developing their competitive coaching experience within a supportive club environment.
Main responsibilities:
- Deliver or assist with engaging, age-appropriate development squad sessions.
- Help swimmers improve their technique across all four strokes, starts, turns and underwater skills.
- Create a positive environment in which young swimmers feel challenged, supported and motivated.
- Work closely with the Head Coach and wider coaching team to provide a consistent pathway through the club.
- Support the monitoring and progression of swimmers within the development programme.
- Attend appropriate competitions or club events where agreed and available.
Swimming Teacher
The Swimming Teacher will work within Aquajets Swim School, supporting children from their first experiences in the water through to more advanced stroke-development and lane-swimming classes.
Lessons range from 30-minute Learn to Swim classes to longer transition and development sessions. Teaching may take place from poolside or in the water, depending on the age and ability of the swimmers.
Main responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver safe, enjoyable and progressive swimming lessons.
- Teach children of different ages and abilities, from beginners through to development-level swimmers.
- Help swimmers develop water confidence, effective technique and a lasting enjoyment of swimming.
- Adapt lessons to meet the needs of individual swimmers.
- Monitor swimmer progress and provide appropriate feedback.
- Communicate positively with swimmers, parents and other members of staff.
Qualifications
Depending on the role, applicants should ideally hold one or more of the following, or a recognised equivalent:
- Swim England Assistant Swimming Coach Certificate.
- Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate.
- SEQ Level 2 in Teaching Swimming.
- A recognised STA swimming-teaching qualification.
Applications from less-experienced coaches or teachers who are currently completing a qualification may also be considered. Support and mentoring can be provided to suitable candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, reliability and potential.
All appointments will be subject to satisfactory references, relevant qualification checks, safeguarding requirements and an enhanced DBS check.
Hours and payment
- Rate: £18 per hour.
- Contract: Part-time, self-employed.
- Hours: Flexible evening and weekend opportunities, depending on the role and the applicant’s availability.
The exact sessions and responsibilities will be agreed with each successful applicant.
