About us

Cheshire Coroner’s Court provides an award‑winning service to the residents of Cheshire and is led by HM Senior Coroner Jacqueline Devonish, working alongside a team of five Coroners. As a Court Usher, the successful candidate will work closely with a supportive team of four administrators and two court ushers who help manage the daily running of the court. We enjoy a close relationship with experienced volunteers from the Coroners Court Support Service. The role also involves regular contact with investigative officers from Cheshire Police, who assist with case enquiries. This is a collaborative environment where teamwork plays an essential part in ensuring the court operates smoothly and professionally.

The role

Our ushers play a key part in supporting the daily operations of Cheshire Coroner’s Court. This role involves managing a variety of administrative tasks that help ensure cases progress smoothly and the court runs efficiently. The successful candidate will also actively support the Coroner while sitting in court. Day‑to‑day duties may include welcoming court users, processing documentation relating to inquests, and supporting coroners, witnesses, and families with clear and sensitive communication. The successful candidate will also liaise with external stakeholders in support of the administration team.

What's needed?

This is a role suited to someone who is organised, approachable, and able to work with empathy and professionalism. You will be part of a supportive team where attention to detail, confidentiality, and teamwork are essential. One of the unique aspects of this position is the opportunity to contribute to meaningful public service, helping families navigate difficult circumstances and ensuring coronial processes are handled with care and accuracy. The successful candidate will need to have strong style of interpersonal communication and skilled at reading the emotional temperature of the room.

Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position, typically working 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional flexibility may be required to support court schedules or urgent case activity, but this will be discussed in advance where possible. This role is based full‑time in the court building on Museum Street in Warrington. It is not a hybrid or remote working role.

DBS clearance is required.

The ability to converse at ease with court users and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
