Job description

Join DVSA as our Head of Technical & Quality (Vehicle Services) and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of vehicle testing and approval services. As the principal technical authority, you will provide strategic leadership across vehicle services, ensuring high-quality delivery, operational excellence, and readiness for emerging vehicle technologies and regulatory change. Working across policy, digital transformation, and industry partnerships, you will lead technical capability development while championing customer service and continuous improvement.

Your responsibilities will include, but arent limited to:

Shaping the future of DVSA Vehicle Services by leading our national technical delivery and quality assurance function
Acting as the operational technical expert, providing leadership on vehicle standards, testing and approvals.
Driving continuous improvement, ensuring services are compliant, consistent and customer-focused.
Working with colleagues across operations, policy and digital teams to deliver innovation and change across frontline operations.
Preparing the frontline operational delivery team for emerging vehicle technologies, industry developments and future regulations
Building strong relationships with manufacturers, industry partners and key stakeholders to influence and inform delivery.
Developing and inspire technical capability through training, coaching and professional development.
Leading and motivate high-performing teams, creating an inclusive culture where people can thrive.

Required experience:

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

Proven leadership in a complex technical operational environment.
In-depth knowledge of light and/or heavy vehicle engineering and vehicle technologies.
Experience translating strategic objectives into operational action
Experience of managing quality systems ensuring consistency of output or process delivery
Commercial awareness, and an understanding of issues and trends impacting industry
Experience of using a wide range of complex information, including MI and industry trends, to inform strategies and decision making
Experience working across teams both internally and externally and collaborating with teams to achieve mutual understanding and outcomes.

Additional Information

Operational Delivery Profession (ODP) is the largest and most diverse professional community across the Civil Service. Many of us will have an association with several professional communities or specialisms, ODP applies to all public facing roles / or a role that is primarily aligned to supporting the work of those with public facing roles. All critical to the delivery of UK public services.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 35 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

Extensive travel to other offices will be required, which may involve overnight stays.
