Best Choice Wholesale is a UK wholesale and e-commerce business supplying household goods, kitchenware, cleaning products, drinks, confectionery, smoking accessories and other fast-moving consumer products to trade customers.
We operate an established BigCommerce online store and are looking for an E-commerce Web Designer to take responsibility for its design, usability and continuing development.
About the role
This is a hands-on web-design position focused on improving the appearance, functionality and customer experience of our e-commerce website.
The successful candidate will design and implement website pages and interfaces, improve customer journeys and continually optimise the website across desktop, tablet and mobile devices. You will work directly with management to understand commercial requirements and translate them into practical and effective website designs.
The position is primarily concerned with web design and UI/UX. Website analytics, on-page SEO and digital design will form supporting parts of the role, but the principal responsibility will be the design and continuing improvement of the company’s e-commerce website.
Main responsibilities
- Review the existing BigCommerce website and identify opportunities to improve its design, usability and overall customer experience.
- Consult with management to understand business requirements and define specifications for website pages, interfaces and design improvements.
- Produce user flows, wireframes, mock-ups and prototypes for significant website changes.
- Design modern, professional and responsive website interfaces for desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
- Design and continually improve product pages, category pages, landing pages, promotional pages and other e-commerce interfaces.
- Improve menus, navigation, product filters, search presentation and customer journeys so customers can find products and complete purchases more easily.
- Implement approved designs within the company’s BigCommerce website.
- Use HTML and CSS, and JavaScript where appropriate, to implement or refine website designs and front-end functionality.
- Create and maintain reusable page templates, design components and visual standards to ensure consistency throughout the website.
- Produce website graphics, banners and other visual assets required for the online store.
- Ensure website content, imagery and product information are displayed accurately and professionally.
- Use Google Analytics and other relevant data to identify usability issues and opportunities to improve customer engagement and conversion rates.
- Conduct usability reviews and appropriate testing of new layouts, pages and customer journeys.
- Monitor the results of design changes and make continuing evidence-based improvements.
- Ensure designs follow responsive-design, browser-compatibility, accessibility and page-performance principles.
- Identify and resolve website layout, display, usability and front-end functionality issues.
- Work with external technical providers where specialist development or platform support is required.
- Maintain appropriate records and documentation of templates, designs and website changes.
- Keep up to date with developments in e-commerce design, UI/UX practices and relevant web technologies.
Supporting digital responsibilities
- Design landing pages and website assets required for online promotions.
- Ensure page layouts and website structures follow appropriate on-page SEO principles.
- Use analytics and testing to evaluate the effectiveness of website designs.
- Provide website-design input where management or external marketing providers are developing an online campaign.
The role does not include primary responsibility for managing the company’s PPC, email-marketing or social-media campaigns.
Essential qualifications and experience
- A degree or equivalent qualification in web design, information technology, computer science, digital design or a related subject, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrable practical experience in web design, preferably involving an e-commerce website.
- A portfolio or suitable examples demonstrating relevant website, interface or responsive-design work.
- Experience working with an e-commerce platform such as BigCommerce, Shopify, WooCommerce or an equivalent system.
- Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS.
- A working understanding of JavaScript and front-end website functionality.
- Good understanding of responsive and mobile-first web design.
- Understanding of user-centred design, UI/UX principles, customer journeys and conversion-focused website design.
- Ability to produce wireframes, mock-ups or prototypes using appropriate design tools.
- Experience using Google Analytics or similar website-analytics tools.
- Ability to analyse a website problem, develop an appropriate design solution and assist with its implementation.
- Strong attention to detail, communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently, take responsibility for projects and meet agreed deadlines.
Desirable experience
- Direct experience working with BigCommerce themes or templates.
- Knowledge of GraphQL, APIs or third-party e-commerce integrations.
- Experience with Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator or similar design tools.
- Understanding of website accessibility standards.
- Knowledge of SEO-friendly website structure.
- Previous experience within a wholesale, retail or product-based e-commerce business.
