Talbot’s Upholstery is a friendly, family-run business in Sheffield, specialising in high-quality furniture restoration, reupholstery and bespoke upholstery work for both commercial and domestic clients.
We are looking for a skilled, reliable Upholsterer to join our supportive workshop team. You will already have practical upholstery experience and a real pride in producing excellent work. We will provide training and ongoing support to help you strengthen particular skills, learn new techniques and continue developing in the role.
This is a varied, hands-on position. You will work on a range of furniture projects, from traditional restoration to contemporary bespoke pieces — no two days are the same!
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Upholsterer to join our team on a permanent basis, with options for part-time or full-time employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for restoring and creating high-quality upholstered furniture, ensuring attention to detail and craftsmanship. What You'll Be Doing
- Preparing, stripping and repairing furniture
- Applying foam, fillings and other upholstery materials
- Measuring, cutting and fitting fabric or leather
- Upholstering and finishing furniture to a high standard
- Using professional hand and power tools safely
- Completing finishing details such as buttons, trims and decorative accessories
- Carrying out quality checks and supporting workshop organisation
- Working with the team to solve problems and keep projects moving
Responsibilities
- Repairing, restoring, and upholstering furniture to meet client specifications
- Cutting fabric, foam, and other materials accurately using hand tools and power tools
- Assembling furniture components with precision and care
- Operating sewing machines to attach fabrics securely and neatly
- Fabricating customised upholstery pieces according to design plans
- Using mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot and maintain tools and equipment
- Heavy lifting of materials such as foam, fabric rolls, and furniture parts safely and efficiently
- Organising workspaces within the warehouse or workshop for optimal workflow
- Ensuring all work complies with safety standards and quality expectations
Qualifications
- Proven experience as an upholsterer or in a similar fabrication role
- Mechanical knowledge relevant to upholstery tools and machinery
- Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and sewing equipment
- Strong understanding of fabric types, foam cutting, and furniture assembly processes
- Warehouse experience is advantageous for handling materials efficiently
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and effectively
- Excellent attention to detail with a focus on craftsmanship and quality standards
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
