The Policing, Fire and Crime Directorate is the link between the public, Police and Fire service. The team works to ensure Police and Fire are held to account, and that the public’s questions and concerns are taken seriously. The team ensures community needs are met effectively, setting objectives through the Police and Crime Plan and Fire and Rescue Plan.
They also invest millions of pounds a year on key commissioned services for the local community, helping both to prevent crime and support those impacted by it. Supporting victims of crimes, working to reduce reoffending and addressing the root causes of crime activity. Working in partnership with the community to enhancing community safety, the service ensures voices and concerns of the public are considered, to drive improvement in the delivery of public services.
The Opportunity
The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority is seeking to appoint a Victim Care Coordinator, within the Supporting Victims Team in the Directorate for Policing, Fire and Crime.
Are you passionate about supporting people in times of need? We are looking for compassionate and motivated individuals to join our team as Victim Care Coordinators, providing vital support to those affected by crime across North Yorkshire.
In this rewarding role, you will be the first point of contact for victims, offering tailored emotional and practical support, helping them cope and recover.
About the Role
As a Victim Care Coordinator, you will:
- Provide telephone-based support to victims of crime, including those who may not have reported incidents to police
- Manage a daily caseload of victims and prioritise contact within required timeframes
- Assess individual needs and deliver personalised support plans
- Offer guidance on available services, including counselling, restorative justice, and specialist support
- Make referrals to appropriate services and partner organisations with consent
- Maintain accurate records on the Supporting Victims Case Management System
- Work closely with North Yorkshire Police and partner agencies to achieve the best outcomes
- Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation, policies, and the Victims’ Code
Key Responsibilities
- Contact victims in line with priority and agreed communication methods
- Respond sensitively to emotionally challenging situations
- Contribute to risk assessments and safeguarding considerations
- Handle referrals from multiple channels including phone, website, and partner agencies
- Follow strict confidentiality and information-sharing protocols
- Keep up to date with available victim support services
- Participate in team debriefs and ongoing learning
What you will bring
- Experience in a customer service or contact centre environment
- Excellent communication skills, particularly over the phone
- Ability to manage sensitive and emotionally challenging conversations with empathy
- Highly organised, able to meet targets and deadlines
- Works effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Is IT literate, with experience using Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
- Understands the importance of confidentiality and data protection
- Is flexible and able to adapt to changing priorities
