Full job description

Job Summary

Sterling is looking for an experienced and proactive HR & People Manager to lead the development of a stable, engaged and capable workforce across the business, for both office- and factory-based staff. This role will take ownership of recruitment, onboarding, training, engagement and retention, working closely with managers to ensure the right people are in the right roles and that every team has the skills and support needed to meet our business goals.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment & Headhunting

· Work with managers across the business to identify current and future staffing needs.

· Ensure clear and precise job descriptions are in place for all roles

· Ensure pay rates are kept competitive across the industry and all roles

· Proactively identify, attract and engage high-quality candidates for all roles

· Manage the recruitment process, including advertising, screening, interviews, offers, onboarding and agency relationships.

Training & Development

· Introduce structured induction, probation and early-stage reviews for every new starter.

· Maintain skills development frameworks across all functions to support business goals

· Support the development of multi-skilled employees and leadership capability, identifying succession & role backups across the business.

Engagement, Performance & Retention

· Build trusted relationships across the business and understand the issues affecting performance, engagement and retention.

· Support managers in setting clear expectations, conducting effective reviews, recognising strong contribution and addressing poor performance or attendance.

· Conduct staff surveys and exit interviews, analysing trends and recommending practical improvements accordingly

· Foster and support the Sterling Core Values as culture across the business

Promote wellbeing of employees

· Ensuring Sterling is a great place to work

· Supporting motivation

· Promoting recognition – not necessarily reward/financial

Key Performance Indicators

· Create appropriate metrics that allow you and the Management Team to measure success. These include but are not restricted to:

· Vacancy fill rate

· New-starter retention

· Overall employee turnover

· Agency labour usage and direct recruitment cost.

· Skills coverage

· Employee engagement.

· Absence %

· Overtime %

Skills & Experience

· Recruitment or workforce development experience and credibility in similar operational or industrial environments.

· Proven ability to directly source and headhunt skilled candidates.

· Strong communication, coaching, organisation and relationship-building skills

· Proactive, resilient and commercially focused.

Pay: £50,000.00-£70,000.00 per year
