Please note: We are only looking for Trainee Train Drivers at Sellafield. Due to the anticipated volume of applications, individual feedback will not be provided. This position requires regular attendance at the Sellafield site, therefore applicants must reside within a 1 hour drive from the site.

As a Trainee Train Driver at NTS, you'll embark on an intensive training programme designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become a qualified Train Driver. Along the way, you'll work towards achieving your European Train Driver Licence, learning how to safely operate trains, carry out train preparation activities, perform shunting duties, and support the delivery of services that play a vital role in the UK's nuclear industry.

What You'll Be Learning and Doing
Becoming a Qualified Train Driver
Throughout your training, you'll develop the skills and competence required to safely and punctually operate train services whilst supporting customer and business requirements.
You'll learn how to:
Operate train services safely and professionally.
Work in compliance with GERT8000 Railway Group Standards and associated railway documentation.
Comply with Dangerous Goods Regulations (RID).
Follow all company procedures and operational standards.
Meet competency and assessment requirements throughout your training.
Complete operational reports and documentation accurately.
Work safely whilst supporting the requirements of the Competency Management System (CMS).
Learning Train Person Duties
As part of your development, you'll gain experience carrying out Train Person responsibilities including:
Following operational rules, standards and procedures.
Carrying and maintaining required PPE and equipment.
Ensuring documentation is correctly completed and issued to trains.
Arriving prepared and ready for duty.
Working safely and professionally at all times.
Meeting all required competency assessments.
Traffic Examination and Shunting Activities
Depending on location requirements, you'll receive training to undertake:
Traffic Examination duties on rail vehicles.
Shunting operations and associated activities.
Traffic Examination checks when required.
Competency management activities to ensure refresher assessments are completed on time.
️ Developing Route and Traction Knowledge
A key part of becoming a successful Train Driver is building and maintaining route and traction competence.
You'll:
Develop and maintain route knowledge and traction competence.
Monitor your own competence levels and identify refresher requirements.
Follow route knowledge request procedures.
Retain the skills needed to operate safely across authorised routes and traction types.
Managing Publications, Notices and Competence
You'll be responsible for learning how to:
Review, acknowledge and understand operational publications and notices.
Comply fully with CMS requirements.
Ensure publications are current and up to date.
Carry relevant notices and safety information whilst on duty.
Review notice cases and local notices where applicable.
Training and Continuous Development
Learning never stops in Rail.
As part of your development programme you'll:
Attend all training courses required for the role.
Complete Non-Technical Skills (NTS) training.
Complete Radiological Awareness training.
Participate in operational exercises and training events.
Continuously develop knowledge, skills and competence throughout the programme.
Keeping Safety at the Heart of Everything

Where required you'll:
Operate company road vehicles safely and responsibly.

What We're Looking For
Essential Qualifications
✅ Full UK Car Driving Licence
✅ Minimum age of 21 upon completion of training
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
We'll be looking for people who can demonstrate:
An understanding of the Rail Industry.
A basic understanding of the DRS business.
Awareness of safety-critical working practices.
The ability to obtain and maintain Personal Track Safety competence.
The ability to obtain and maintain Rules and Regulations competence.
The ability to obtain and maintain traction and route knowledge.
Strong teamwork skills whilst remaining capable of working independently.
A flexible approach to working patterns and operational disruption.
Additional Information
To be successful in this role you'll need to:
✅ Meet the medical requirements of GORT3251 Group Standard, including drugs and alcohol testing.
✅ Live within approximately one hour travelling distance of the depot due to the safety-critical nature of the role.
✅ Obtain and maintain SC Security Clearance.
✅ Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.
✅ Be willing and able to travel when required.
✅ Starting Trainee salary of £45,356.00 raising to £72,606.00 upon successful completion of your training.
