About McPherson
McPherson Ltd is an established multi-site logistics operation based in Moray, running a fleet with around 350 drivers across Scotland. We work with distilleries, producers and processors across the region, moving everything from bulk items and liquids to co-products, and we're investing in the systems and people that keep the operation running at its best.
The role
No transport experience needed. We'll teach you.
Transport planning is the job of working out who goes where, in what, and when. Every day the work comes in, and someone has to match it to the right vehicles and the right drivers, then handle it when a lorry breaks down, a customer moves a slot, or the weather closes a road.
It's a puzzle that changes all day, and it's a proper career.
We're looking for someone organised and quick-thinking who wants to learn it properly, alongside an experienced team who'll teach you the job.
What you'll be learning
Starting with the basics and building up as you go:
- How the daily plan is built, and why it's built that way
- Allocating work to vehicles and drivers
- Speaking with drivers about their day
- Keeping customers updated on collections and deliveries
- Recording work accurately in our transport system
- The rules that govern the industry, including drivers' hours, vehicle types and what can legally go where
- How to re-plan when the day goes sideways, which it will
Within a year you'll be running your own desk.
What you'll need
Essential
- Organised, with real attention to detail
- Comfortable holding several things at once without dropping any
- Confident on a computer and happy to learn new systems
- A clear, straightforward communicator, as you'll be on the phone a lot
- Calm when things get busy
- Willing to make a decision and stand behind it
- Full UK driving licence
Not required
- Any transport or logistics experience
- Any specific qualifications
Who this suits
You don't need to have worked in transport. You do need to have handled a busy day where lots of things needed to happen at once.
If you've run a shift in hospitality, managed a rota, coordinated jobs for a trades team, worked a service desk, run a busy retail floor, or organised anything where the plan changed hourly, you already have the instincts. We'll teach you the rest.
Ideal if you're looking for a career rather than a job and want to learn something you can build on.
