About Us

The Picnic Box is a busy, independent sandwich shop in the heart of Ambleside, specialising in freshly prepared, made-to-order sandwiches and quality coffee. Every order is prepared fresh using quality ingredients, with a strong focus on consistency, attention to detail and outstanding customer service.

Purpose of the Role

As a Front of House / Kitchen Team Member, you will play a key role in the day-to-day running of The Picnic Box. This is a varied, hands-on position requiring flexibility to work across both the kitchen and front of house, ensuring every customer receives outstanding food and service.

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation

Prepare high-quality, made-to-order sandwiches and other menu items to company standards.
Assist with food preparation and daily kitchen duties.
Ensure excellent food presentation and portion consistency.
Follow all food safety and hygiene procedures.

Front of House

Provide a warm, friendly and professional welcome to every customer.
Take customer orders and operate the till accurately.
Prepare coffees and hot drinks to a consistent standard.
Maintain an excellent customer experience at all times.

Operations

Assist with stock control and stock replenishment.
Support product ordering where required.
Help minimise food wastage.
Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the shop.
Assist with opening and closing duties as required.
Work efficiently and positively during busy service periods.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will:

Have a genuine passion for food and hospitality.
Demonstrate excellent attention to detail.
Have previous experience in hospitality or food service (essential).
Be confident working across both kitchen and front of house.
Be reliable with excellent timekeeping.
Have a positive, proactive and flexible attitude.
Work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Be willing to work weekends and bank holidays as part of the normal rota.

Hours

40 hours per week, worked over five days.
Typical working hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm, with a 30-minute unpaid break each day.
The role includes regular weekend and bank holiday working as part of the normal rota.
Flexibility is required to support the needs of the business, including occasional additional hours where necessary.

Salary & Benefits

Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
Real Living Wage Employer.
One complimentary meal provided during each shift.
28 days' paid annual leave (pro rata for part-time employees), inclusive of bank holidays.
Bank holidays form part of the normal working rota and do not automatically entitle employees to leave on those dates.
