1:1 Learning Support Assistant (Year 6)

Part-Time, Permanent
Term Time Only
Monday-Friday, 8.15am-1.15pm
Start Date: 1st September 2026

The Old School Henstead is seeking a caring, enthusiastic and committed 1:1 Learning Support Assistant to support a bright and engaging Year 6 pupil with autism from 1st September 2026.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work closely with a pupil who is curious, thoughtful and passionate about subjects such as science and the natural world. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping him access learning, build confidence, develop friendships and continue the excellent progress he has made in recent years.

You will work alongside the Year 6 teacher and under the guidance of the school's SENCo, who will provide ongoing support with EHCP provision, assessment and planning.

As a small independent school, we pride ourselves on knowing every child as an individual. The successful candidate will join a warm, supportive team with high expectations and a strong commitment to inclusion.

About the Role

The pupil is academically curious, enjoys sharing his knowledge and responds particularly well to adults who are patient, flexible and able to build positive relationships.

Your role will include:

Providing consistent 1:1 support throughout the morning
Supporting engagement with learning through the pupil's strengths and interests
Helping break tasks into manageable steps
Encouraging increasing independence and confidence
Supporting social interaction and friendship development
Providing emotional reassurance and helping the pupil recognise and regulate feelings
Supporting the use of sensory strategies and movement breaks when needed
Working closely with teaching staff, the SENCo and parents
Contributing to observations, record keeping and EHCP reviews
Helping to create a calm, positive and successful school experience

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

Is calm, patient and nurturing
Has high expectations for pupils with SEND
Can build trusting relationships with children
Is flexible, creative and solution-focused
Enjoys working as part of a team
Has excellent communication skills
Can recognise when to encourage, when to adapt and when to celebrate success
Understands the importance of promoting independence

Essential Criteria

Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent experience)
Experience supporting children with SEND
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare

Desirable Criteria

Experience supporting autistic pupils
Understanding of sensory processing differences
Experience working with Key Stage 2 pupils
Knowledge of communication and interaction needs
Familiarity with approaches that promote emotional regulation and independence
Knowledge of the Cherry Garden Curriculum

Working Hours

The school operates during term time only (34 weeks per year plus staff training days).

Monday-Friday
8.15am-1.15pm
