Specialist Mentor (Mental Health)

Cosmic People are a DSA registered provider of NMH support to students in Higher Education.

We currently have a vacancy for a Specialist Mentor (Mental Health) to work with students with a mental health diagnosis on a one to one basis on-campus in accordance with their DSA Needs Assessment Report, assisting with their emotional wellbeing and arising concerns whilst they are studying at university.

Job role specifications: -

As a Specialist Mentor (Mental Health) you will provide specialist, specifically tailored support to enable students to overcome barriers to learning created by a particular disability (e.g. various mental health issues) and to develop students’ skills for autonomy and success in the learning environment.

The support you provide will be student-led to include: motivation, goal setting, empowerment, emotional wellbeing, organisation, time management, social skills, amongst others.

Qualifications required:-

Membership of a registered professional body is required for this role. Professional Body membership must be at the levels listed. Any membership level outside of this list such as student, individual, or affiliate does not confer a sufficient level to deliver this role. Membership should be kept up to date while delivering DSA funded roles. Membership cards should show a name and dates of validity and level of membership period or have evidence to support this.

Successful Candidate:-

Have excellent communication, time management and organisational skills
A good knowledge of the English language
Be able to work flexibly to support student’s needs
Maintain professional boundaries and respect confidentiality and data protection requirements
Be capable and confident and able to work on your own initiative
Have problem solving skills, empathy, diplomacy and sensitivity
Empower the student by teaching techniques and strategies to overcome problems
Using coaching and mentoring techniques to address barriers to learning
Be student-centered in approach, encouraging students to identify their own objectives for the sessions, whilst using professional judgement to assess their needs
Be an experienced counsellor willing to transfer these skills to supporting students on a one to one basis in Higher Education
A good understanding of the academic and social challenges of university life
IT literate with the capability and knowledge to deliver supplemental remote support
