APPLICANTS MUST HAVE AN NVQ LEVEL 3 IN CARE and previous experience as an HCA with a Care Competency Certificate.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a number of Band 3 Healthcare Assistants to join our team within Surgery, Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Theatres.

Please note that this vacancy may close early. To apply for this role you must have experience of working as a Healthcare Assistant and have a National Vocational Qualification NVQ Level 3 qualification. (NVQ is a UK-based, work-based certificate)

We are seeking highly enthusiastic and motivated individuals, with a passion for providing excellence within patient care, to join our team to help support the multidisciplinary team in delivering high-quality, holistic care to patients admitted to the Surgical Assessment Unit and Surgical Rapid Access clinic.

You would also be required to bring photo ID and your NVQ 3 Certificate to this interview.

Clinical Support:

Assist patients with daily personal care: hygiene, dressing, toileting, oral care, and continence needs.

Monitor and record vital signs (NEWS2): temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.

Perform various additional clinical activities such as blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, venepuncture and recording of ECGs.

Assist in mobility.

Support patients with dietary needs, including post-abdominal surgery requirements (e.g. low-residue diets, enteral feeding assistance).

Assist in pain management by reporting pain scores and responding to patient discomfort under supervision.

Chaperone patients during investigations (e.g. wound assessments, line insertions).

Escort patients to theatre, imaging, and other departments as required.

Health Care Assistant – Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. Working Within Scope and Supervision

Operate as part of a multidisciplinary team, carrying out delegated duties under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional.

Always act within the boundaries of your training, competence, and Trust guidelines.

Seek guidance or support from senior staff when unsure or when patient needs exceed your role.

2. Delivery of Compassionate, Person-Centred Care

Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, families, carers, and colleagues using appropriate techniques including empathy, tact, reassurance, and persuasion.

Maintain confidentiality and dignity at all times, upholding Trust values and standards.

Contribute to patient comfort and dignity through personal care tasks such as:

Oral care, personal hygiene, and toileting support.

Supporting patients with mobility and positioning, including the use of hoists and wheelchairs.

Assisting with activities of daily living, ensuring person-centred care is maintained.

3. Monitoring and Responding to Patient Needs

Observe and assess patients’ personal care needs and overall condition, reporting any concerns promptly to registered staff.

Support patients’ nutritional needs, including:
Assisting with feeding.

Accurately recording dietary intake and fluid balance.

Reporting any changes in eating or drinking habits.

Manage patient property in accordance with Trust policy and procedures.

4. Supporting Safe and Effective Care

Undertake delegated procedures under appropriate supervision and within the limits of your competence, such as moving and handling and hygiene tasks.

Contribute to maintaining a safe and clean environment by following Trust policies on infection control, health and safety, and duty of care.

Participate in team handovers to ensure continuity of care.

5. Team Contribution and Departmental Support

Demonstrate and support basic care duties for new staff, contributing to a supportive learning environment.

Monitor and replenish clinical and non-clinical supplies to support service delivery.

Collaborate with colleagues, patients, and their carers/families to support coordinated care delivery.

6. Professional Development

Take personal responsibility for ongoing learning and development, maintaining accurate records of training and personal development activities.

Engage in appraisals and actively seek feedback to enhance performance and skills.
