About us

Hooper & Co is a specialist consultancy advising manufacturers, importers and exporters on customs, trade compliance, export controls and carbon border reporting. Our clients are mid-market British businesses moving goods across borders.

The role

We are looking for a graduate to train as a consultant. You will work under our Senior Consultant. Day to day you will:

attend client calls and site visits alongside a senior colleague
check clients' import and export records and paperwork
research trade regulations and customs rules to support live client work
draft sections of client reports and advice
help prepare training material and briefings for clients

Travel to client sites across the Midlands and further afield is part of the job.

Training and progression

You will have a written development plan from your first week, with reviews at four weeks, eleven weeks and six months. Within it, we will fund your ATT Foundation Qualification in VAT Compliance in your first year, covering registration, study materials and exam fees. As your specialist area develops, we will look at further qualifications to support it.

By year two you will own your own clients and your own subject. By year three the aim is that you are running a service line of your own. Both of our current consultants joined this way. Salary is reviewed every year.

What we are looking for

a 2:1 or above in any subject. Business, economics, law, politics, international studies and sustainable development are all useful backgrounds, but we are not restricting it to those.
attention to detail
clear, plain writing
willingness to learn from feedback
a full UK driving licence. Mileage is paid
the right to work in the UK. We are not able to sponsor visas

No experience in customs or trade is needed. We will teach you. If you do not tick every box above, apply anyway.

What we offer

£27,000. Company pension. On-site parking. We work 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and finish at 1pm on Friday, with some flexibility around client visits, events and travel.

We will ask you about your answers at interview. Applications without a covering note will not be read.
