JOB TITLE: Head of Literacy - English/Literature
TEACHERS PAY: Competitive – NMS Main or Upper Payscale + TLR + SEN (if applicable)
LINE MANAGER: Assistant Head Teaching, Learning and Curriculum
This post will be aligned to the school’s appraisal system, relative to the skills and experience of the member of staff. The post holder will be held accountable through the performance and line management systems to carry out the professional duties as listed.
JOB PURPOSE
To carry out the professional duties of a department lead and class teacher in accordance with the school’s policies under the direction of the Headteacher.
The subject leader will take lead responsibility for providing leadership and management for English/literacy to secure:
High-quality teaching and subject knowledge of staff
A coherently planned and sequenced curriculum in English and Literature
A cohesive intervention strategy incorporating all aspects of the Literacy Department
Improved standards of learning, achievement and enjoyment for all
Consistent assessment and accurate teacher judgements within the subject
Effective use of resources

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY AND KEY TASKS
Subject knowledge and curriculum development
· Use extensive, up-to-date subject knowledge to lead English/literacy across the school, and keep up to date with developments in pedagogy and the curriculum
· Oversee the planning of curriculum content, ensuring it is well sequenced to promote student progress
· Ensure the planned curriculum is effectively and consistently implemented across the school
· Work with teachers and other subject leads to build links between the English and English literature curriculum/literacy skills and the wider curriculum and intervention department
· Promote a high standard of speaking, listening, writing and reading of English among colleagues
Leading the Department
· Establish positive working relationships among colleagues, modelling effective teamworking and support
· Help colleagues develop positive communication with students and parents / carers
· Appraise colleagues and help them develop professionally following the school policy
Planning, Teaching and Class Management
To effectively teach and support students and achieve progression of learning through:
· identifying clear learning objectives and specifying how they will be taught and assessed
· setting tasks which challenge students and ensure high levels of interest
· setting appropriate and supportive expectations
· setting clear targets, building on prior attainment and identifying steps in learning
· identifying students with additional needs as well as very able students and ensuring teaching is adapted for their needs
· providing clear structures for lessons maintaining pace, motivation and challenge
· effectively using other extra-curricular learning opportunities
· making effective use of assessment and ensuring coverage of programmes of study
· maintaining positive behavior support in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures
· using a variety of teaching methods to reach the needs of learners
· selecting appropriate learning resources and developing study skills
· ensuring students acquire and consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to the subject taught
· evaluating own teaching critically to improve effectiveness
· ensuring the effective and efficient deployment of available classroom support
Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting
· assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use them to improve specific aspects of teaching
· assess and monitor students’ work and set targets for progress
· assess and record students’ progress systematically and keep records to check work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which the student is achieving
· undertake assessment of students as requested by examination bodies, departmental and school procedures
· prepare and present informative reports to parents
· contribute to the annual review process
· use assessment to inform planning and teaching
Curriculum Development
- develop plans which identify clear targets and success criteria for its development and/or
maintenance
- contribute to the whole department and whole school’s planning activities
Pastoral Duties
· carry out such reasonable duties as specified by the Headteacher including the role of Form Tutor
· promote the general progress and well-being of students
· liaise with the Assistant Head Teacher (Behavior & Engagement) to ensure the implementation of the school’s pastoral system
· register students, accompany them to assemblies, encourage their full attendance at all lessons and their participation in other aspects of school life
· contribute to the preparation of EHCP reviews and progress files, annual reviews and other reports
· alert appropriate staff of problems experienced by students and make recommendations as to how these may be resolved
· communicate, as appropriate, with parents of students and persons or bodies outside the school concerned with the welfare of individual students, after consultation with appropriate staff
· contribute to PSHE, Online Safety and citizenship according to school policy
Other Professional Requirements
· have a working knowledge of teachers’ professional duties and legal liabilities
· always operate within the stated policies and practices of the school
· know subject(s) or specialism(s) to enable effective teaching
· establish effective working relationships and set a good example through their presentation and personal and professional conduct

· contribute positively and effectively to the school’s ethos
· co-operate with other staff to ensure sharing and effective participation in meetings and management systems necessary to coordinate the management of the school
· take part in marketing and liaison activities when required, such as Open Days, Parent Workshops, School Productions and events with partner schools
· take responsibility for own professional development and duties in relation to school policies and practices
· liaise effectively with parents/carers, governors and outside agencies
· uphold the school’s policies for anti-discriminatory practice and equality of opportunity
· have due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and to follow the child protection procedures adopted by the Northease Manor School’s Safeguarding policy.
· uphold the school’s and other departments’ Health and Safety requirements, particularly with regard to agreed codes of practice and safe methods of working
