Post Title: Assistant Head of House - non teaching

Responsible to: Headteacher, Governors

All employees must have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school, and maintain high standards in their own attendance and punctuality.

All employees must have an understanding of, and always act within, the statutory frameworks which set out their professional duties and responsibilities.

The duties outlined within this job description may be modified by the Headteacher in consultation with the post holder to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title. The post-holder will be assessed against the relevant standards above.

This post is subject to the schools Performance Management Policy, Quality Assurance Policy and Health & Safety Policy along with all other school policies outlined in the School’s Handbook.

General.

Person Specification (Summary)

· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with young people.

· Experience in pastoral care, student mentoring, or education.

· Strong classroom management and supervision skills.

· Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload.

· Confident IT and administration skills.

· A commitment to safeguarding, equality, and school improvement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Pastoral Support

· Support the Head of House in promoting student welfare and personal development.

· Monitor and respond to student behaviour, attendance, punctuality, and well-being across a designated House.

· Build positive relationships with students and act as a mentor or a point of contact for individual needs.

· Have knowledge and appreciation of the range of activities, courses, opportunities, agencies and services that could be drawn upon to provide support for students.

· Assist with the implementation of pastoral programs and behaviour strategies aligned with school policy.

· Support, attend, and contribute to house events and activities.

· Liaise with families, carers, and external agencies to support student needs effectively.

· Help coordinate and support the delivery of effective student leadership opportunities.

· Contribute to the celebration of success across the House.

2. Academic Support & Progress Monitoring

· Collaborate with Heads of House and teaching staff to monitor academic progress across the year group.

· Contribute to target-setting, student reporting, and the review of interventions.

· Ensure students access appropriate academic interventions and mentoring support.

3. Cover Supervision

· Provide cover for teacher absence by supervising pre-prepared lessons (up to 5 days per teacher as needed).

· Ensure effective classroom management and student engagement during cover lessons.

· Communicate learning expectations clearly and manage any arising behaviour in line with school policy.

· Provide feedback to absent teachers and collect completed work.

· Support learning continuity and encourage student participation and cooperation.

· Respond to student questions regarding tasks and clarify instructions as appropriate.

· Maintain a calm and productive classroom environment.

· Help maintain a bank of supervision work in coordination with Heads of Department.

· Refer behavioural issues, arising in class, to the appropriate Head of Department, using the school’s agreed referral processes.

4. Communication and Liaison

· Act as a professional and approachable liaison between students, staff, and parents/carers.

· Maintain clear and respectful communication with stakeholders.

· Support parent meetings and represent the school ethos positively.

5. Administrative and Strategic Support

· Maintain accurate pastoral and academic records.

· Assist with pastoral data management, attendance & progress tracking, and safeguarding documentation.

· Support strategic reviews and development plans related to pastoral and student development work.

· Collaborate with PSHE to promote personal development within curriculum time and during cover sessions.

General Duties

· Contribute to the ethos and aims of the school.

· Promote inclusion and respect for cultural, linguistic, and social diversity.

· Participate in school events, training, CPD, and the Performance Management process.

· Accompany students and staff on educational visits and extra-curricular activities.

· Uphold health & safety and safeguarding procedures at all times.

· Take part in whole-school duties when needed.

· Carry out any other reasonable duties as required by senior staff, commensurate with the role’s grading.
