Shape the future of South West Wales
South West Wales is a region with strong foundations, distinctive places and significant future potential. This is a rare opportunity to play a leading role in shaping how the region grows, connects and develops over the coming decades.
The South West Wales Corporate Joint Committee brings together the local authorities of Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea, alongside Bannau Brycheiniog and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authorities. Together, we are working at regional scale to deliver bold, joined-up action across strategic planning, transport, economic development and energy.
Our ambition is to create a more competitive, connected and resilient South West Wales: a region with improved infrastructure, strong sectoral clusters, sustainable growth, thriving communities and better outcomes for people, businesses and the environment.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced, credible and forward-thinking Strategic Development Lead to establish and lead this critical function within the SWWCJC.
This is a pivotal leadership role at an important stage in the development of the region’s Strategic Development Plan. Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, elected Members, local authorities, National Park Authorities, Welsh Government and wider partners, you will help turn regional ambition into a clear, deliverable and evidence-led spatial framework for South West Wales.
You will provide strategic leadership for the preparation and delivery of the Strategic Development Plan, build effective partnerships across the region, and ensure that spatial planning is fully aligned with wider priorities including transport, energy, economic development, climate resilience, housing, infrastructure and sustainable growth.
About you
You will bring substantial experience in strategic planning and development plan preparation, ideally gained within or alongside the public sector. You will understand the complexity of working across organisations, places and political environments, and will be confident advising senior leaders and Members on complex planning and policy matters.
We are looking for someone who can combine professional expertise with collaborative leadership: someone able to build trust, navigate competing priorities, develop strong evidence-based approaches and motivate others to deliver high-quality outcomes.
You will be comfortable operating in a complex, politically sensitive, multi-stakeholder environment, with the judgement, resilience and communication skills needed to lead a high-profile regional planning agenda.
Why join us?
This role offers the chance to influence one of the most important long-term planning programmes in South West Wales. You will work at the heart of regional decision-making, help establish a new strategic planning function, and contribute directly to a plan that will shape future growth, investment, infrastructure and place-making across the region.
If you are ready to bring strategic vision, professional expertise and collaborative leadership to a role with genuine regional impact, we would welcome your application.
