Full job description

We are looking to employ a highly efficient Kitchen Assistant to perform all washing, cleaning and basic meal preparation duties required in our kitchen. The Kitchen Assistant's responsibilities include cutting and portioning meat/veg, informing the chefs when food supplies are low, and appropriately storing washed dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment. You should also be able to accurately measure ingredients as per the Chef’s instructions.

To be successful as a Kitchen Assistant, you should display excellent communication skills and be able to follow instructions. Ultimately, a great Kitchen Assistant should adhere to food health and safety regulations while carrying out all kitchen duties.

Kitchen Assistant Responsibilities

Cleaning and sanitising all food preparation areas as well as kitchen walls, stoves, sinks, ovens, and grills.
Sweeping and mopping all kitchen areas during shifts and at the end of shifts.
Washing dirty dishes, cutting boards, utensils, and cooking equipment.
Ensuring that food mixers, cookers, and other cooking equipment are in good working order.
Receiving and unpacking all deliveries.
Emptying, re-lining, and washing bins as required.
Ensuring that refrigerators, freezers, and storage areas are clean and well-organised.
Assisting the chefs with basic food preparation, which includes washing, peeling, and cutting meal ingredients as per the chefs instructions.

Kitchen Assistant Requirements

Working knowledge of food health and safety regulations.
The ability to work as part of a team.
The ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
The ability to stand for extended periods.
Excellent time management skills.
Effective communication skills.

We are currently searching for passionate and hard-working individuals to join our friendly Kitchen Team. We have a part-time position available, to support the smooth and effective operation of all eating and drinking spaces at Housel Bay.

We have two restaurants and a bar, each offering different experiences for our guests. These include our ‘Marconi’s Bar’, our casual dining restaurant ‘The Terrace’, and our signature restaurant ‘Fallowfields’. All showcase local, seasonal produce in a relaxed environment.

‘Fallowfields’ has been receiving many accolades recently, and it is just the start. From winning the Gold award for ‘Restaurant of the Year’ 2024/5 by Cornwall Tourism Awards, and also proudly joining the Michelin Guide in November 2023. In February 2024, 2025 and 2026 Fallowfields was awarded 3AA rosettes, by AA hospitality. We are one out of just five restaurants in Cornwall with this award.

Expected Shifts

Part time hours available to cover a mix of breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend shifts.

Salary

Starting at £12.90 per hour. Opportunity for further increases with skill development and experience.

Finally, Housel Bay ensures that 100% of tips are given to staff on a pro-rata basis, which adds to an individual’s hourly rate.
