Full job description

Overview

A specialist SEND provision in Gainsborough is seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join their team from September. The setting supports children and young people with a range of additional needs, with a particular focus on pupils experiencing SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) difficulties and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).

Many learners within the provision may have experienced disrupted education, adverse childhood experiences, anxiety around education, low self-esteem, difficulties forming positive relationships, or challenges regulating emotions. The school adopts a trauma-informed and therapeutic approach, recognising that behaviour is often a form of communication and placing a strong emphasis on relationship-building, emotional wellbeing and positive engagement.

This is a full-time opportunity with the potential to become a permanent role for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop strong, trusting and consistent relationships with pupils to improve engagement, attendance and participation in education.
Provide one-to-one and small-group mentoring sessions focused on emotional regulation, resilience, self-esteem and social development.
Support pupils who may struggle with classroom expectations, transitions, emotional triggers or anxiety around attending school.
Use restorative and trauma-informed approaches to de-escalate situations and support pupils through periods of dysregulation.
Implement behaviour support plans, risk assessments, emotional regulation strategies and identified interventions.
Work alongside teaching staff to remove barriers to learning and help pupils successfully access lessons.
Support reintegration into learning following periods of disengagement, distress or absence.
Monitor behaviour patterns, emotional wellbeing and progress, maintaining accurate records and observations.
Encourage the development of positive coping strategies, appropriate social interactions and independence.
Liaise effectively with pastoral teams, parents, carers and external professionals to ensure consistency of support.

Pre-requisites:

Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, trauma backgrounds, autism or SEND.
Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, attachment theory, restorative approaches or behaviour support strategies.
Ability to remain calm, empathetic and professional in challenging situations.
Strong understanding of emotional regulation and strategies that support positive behaviour.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Experience in education, youth work, support work, residential care or similar settings is advantageous.
Relevant qualifications in Education, Youth Work, Psychology, Health & Social Care or equivalent experience desirable.

Pay: £95.00-£110.00 per day
