The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) plays a vital role in keeping Britains roads safe and efficient. We are responsible for the registration and licensing of drivers in Great Britain and vehicles across the UK, as well as the collection and enforcement of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Our work ensures that only qualified drivers and correctly taxed vehicles are on the road.

Our key responsibilities include issuing photocard driving licences and vehicle registration certificates, recording driver endorsements and medical conditions, and taking enforcement action against tax evaders. We also register and issue tachograph cards, sell personalised registrations, and support law enforcement by providing crucial data to police and intelligence services. In addition, we offer anonymised data services to authorised users, helping inform public and private sector decision-making.

Job description

You will play a pivotal role in representing the Agency at Magistrates Court(s) as a Prosecutor for vehicle tax and insurance related offences. We will look to you to engage with customers to educate and encourage compliance for these offences.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a role which is varied, where no two days are the same. This can be a challenging yet rewarding role, ensuring road safety and that regulations are followed. You will have the chance to network and build relationships with various stakeholders such as the Police, Local Authorities and Trading Standards.

Your responsibilities will include, but arent limited to:

Manage vehicle enforcement cases at the prosecution stage.
Verify facts and documents on DVLA systems to support decisions on whether to proceed to court.
Communicate with customers through written correspondence, telephone calls and in person.
Educate customers to ensure future compliance.
Prepare cases for court, ensuring compliance with legislation and observing relevant timescales throughout prosecution.
Present cases on behalf of the agency in magistrates court.
Work with other enforcement agencies such as the police and Trading Standards when requested, assisting in operations that expose illegal practices amongst number plates. Support police in roadside operations to report non-compliant plates and unlicensed vehicles.

Person specification

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

Experience of working in an enforcement or legal environment, meaning you are familiar with the processes and standards required when managing cases at the prosecution stage.

We are looking for someone who loves to work autonomously and is comfortable working alone and using their own initiative. You are able to work in an organised and methodical manner and can effectively manage your own time to meet your day to day responsibilities.

You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage with suppliers and enforcement agencies alike and build positive working relationships. You will be engaging and assertive, have the ability to express yourself in a clear and constructive manner, delivering the right messages and conducting challenging conversations when necessary.

Please note: You will be expected to attend court to represent DVLA as a Prosecutor in Slough, Southampton and London. Therefore, you must be willing and able to travel to these locations which may involve overnight stays.

Additional Information

Operational Delivery Profession (ODP) is the largest and most diverse professional community across the Civil Service. Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 35 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (Reading) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

Regular travel to other offices will be required, which may involve overnight stays.
