Who we’re looking for
We are looking for a confident, organised and compassionate Deputy Lead Teacher who can deliver engaging, person-centred education while supporting students to overcome barriers to learning, develop independence and gain meaningful life skills.
The successful candidate will be an adaptable and reflective practitioner who can tailor teaching approaches to meet individual needs. They will work closely with the Lead Teacher and wider team to maintain high standards of teaching, safeguarding and student support.
Alongside their teaching responsibilities, the Deputy Lead Teacher will support the day-to-day running of the provision, provide guidance to Teaching Assistants and step up in the Lead Teacher’s absence. They must be able to remain calm in a dynamic environment, communicate professionally and provide consistent leadership to the wider team.
Essential Criteria
· Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
· Experience of planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons.
· Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet a range of individual learning needs.
· Experience of assessing student progress against agreed learning objectives and targets.
· A strong understanding of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
· Ability to support students who may experience significant barriers to learning.
· Confidence in providing guidance, direction and support to other members of staff.
· Strong organisation, communication and record-keeping skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively with families, professionals, managers and the wider education team.
· Ability to respond calmly and professionally to incidents and challenging situations.
· Understanding of risk assessments and maintaining safe learning environments, including during off-site activities.
· Commitment to working in line with professional teaching standards, organisational policies and procedures.
Desirable Criteria
· Experience of working within alternative provision or another non-traditional education setting.
· Experience of working with children or young people with SEND, SEMH needs or behaviours of concern.
· Experience of supporting students with Education, Health and Care Plans.
· Experience of working with individual learning plans, care plans, risk assessments, behaviour support plans and transition plans.
· Previous experience of supervising, mentoring or line managing Teaching Assistants or support staff.
· Experience of completing staff probation reviews, appraisals and development conversations.
· Experience of deputising for a senior teacher or supporting the operational running of an education provision.
· Knowledge of trauma-informed and person-centred approaches.
· Experience of gathering and recording evidence of learning through electronic recording systems.
· Relevant safeguarding, behaviour support or positive intervention training.
Role Responsibilities
· Plan and deliver high-quality, engaging and person-centred lessons that meet the individual needs of students.
· Differentiate learning activities, resources and teaching approaches to support each student to access education and overcome barriers to learning.
· Develop meaningful timetables that promote academic progress, independence, personal development and life skills.
· Assess, monitor and evaluate student progress against agreed learning objectives and individual targets.
· Oversee the day-to-day management of educational documentation, including individual learning plans, EHCPs, care plans and transition plans.
· Maintain safe learning environments and complete appropriate risk assessments for off-site education.
· Ensure agreed staffing ratios and individual student support requirements are followed.
· Regularly monitor and review the education, safety and wellbeing of students.
· Promote and safeguard the welfare of all children and young people supported by the provision.
· Respond appropriately to incidents, safeguarding concerns and behaviours of concern in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
· Prepare reports, incident overviews and other required documentation within agreed deadlines.
· Attend student reviews, professional meetings, staff meetings and meetings with families when required.
· Communicate professionally with parents, carers, external professionals and internal teams.
· Work closely with the Lead Teacher and wider management team, ensuring relevant information and concerns are communicated promptly.
· Line manage Teaching Assistants as directed, including completing probation reviews, appraisals, regular check-ins and performance and development conversations.
· Support the induction, mentoring and ongoing development of Teaching Assistants.
· Promote consistent practice across the team and ensure staff follow relevant student plans, risk assessments, care plans, behaviour support plans and safeguarding procedures.
· Step up in the absence of the Lead Teacher to support the day-to-day running of the provision and provide guidance to the wider team.
