The Role
We are looking for an ambitious and experienced Business Development Manager to expand our client base, strengthen relationships with existing clients and secure new contracts across the passive fire protection sector.
The successful candidate will be responsible for generating leads, developing contacts, identifying tender and framework opportunities and supporting bids from initial enquiry through to contract award. You will work closely with the Directors, Estimating Team and Operational Teams to ensure opportunities are commercially viable, technically appropriate and aligned with the company’s growth strategy.
This role requires strong technical knowledge of both fire compartmentation and fire door works, together with an understanding of Fire Risk Assessments and the ability to identify opportunities arising from FRA findings and recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
· Identify, develop and secure new business opportunities across the passive fire protection sector.
· Build and maintain relationships with housing associations, local authorities, NHS trusts, education providers, principal contractors, consultants, facilities managers and commercial clients.
· Grow the company’s network of contacts through client meetings, networking events, industry engagement, referrals and targeted outreach.
· Promote BDL Fire Protection’s services, including fire compartmentation surveys and remedial works, fire stopping, fire door inspections, fire door remedials, fire door replacements and works arising from Fire Risk Assessments.
· Interpret Fire Risk Assessment findings and identify opportunities for passive fire protection surveys, remedial works and replacement programmes.
· Identify suitable public and private sector frameworks, procurement opportunities and direct tender invitations.
· Prepare, coordinate and manage PQQs, SQs, framework applications and tender submissions.
· Work with the Estimating and Operational Teams to develop competitive, compliant and deliverable bids.
· Manage the tender pipeline, monitor deadlines and maintain visibility of current and upcoming opportunities.
· Attend client meetings, site visits, pre-tender meetings, presentations and industry events as required.
· Develop account plans that increase repeat business, client retention and cross-selling opportunities.
· Maintain accurate CRM records, contact databases, opportunity logs and sales forecasts.
· Monitor market trends, competitor activity, procurement changes and developments within the fire safety sector.
· Support marketing activity, case studies, capability statements, social media and promotional campaigns.
· Prepare monthly reports covering leads, meetings, tender activity, pipeline value, conversion rates and secured work.
· Represent BDL Fire Protection professionally and uphold the company’s values, standards and reputation at all times.
Technical Knowledge Required
· Fire compartmentation principles, surveys, defects and remedial works.
· Fire stopping systems and the importance of maintaining compartment lines.
· Fire door inspections, surveys, remedial works, adjustments and complete door-set replacements.
· Fire Risk Assessments and how recommendations can lead to surveys, repairs, upgrades and planned programmes of work.
· Passive fire protection compliance, evidence requirements, certification and traceability.
· Ability to discuss technical requirements confidently with clients, contractors, consultants and responsible persons.
What We’re Looking ForEssential
· Proven experience in business development, sales, estimating, account management or bid management within passive fire protection or the wider construction sector.
· Strong practical and technical knowledge of fire compartmentation works and fire door inspections, remedials and replacements.
· Good understanding of Fire Risk Assessments and the ability to convert FRA findings into appropriate business opportunities.
· Demonstrable experience generating leads, winning new business and developing long-term client relationships.
· Experience preparing or coordinating PQQs, SQs, tenders and framework submissions.
· Excellent communication, negotiation, networking and presentation skills.
· Strong commercial awareness and the ability to assess the quality and viability of opportunities.
· A proactive, self-motivated and target-driven approach.
· Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
· Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CRM or sales pipeline systems.
· Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel throughout the UK as required.
Desirable
· Existing network of contacts within passive fire protection, social housing, public sector procurement or the wider construction industry.
· Knowledge of FIRAS, BM TRADA and relevant passive fire protection standards and certification requirements.
· Experience working with housing associations, local authorities, NHS trusts, education providers or principal contractors.
· Experience using tender portals such as Find a Tender, Contracts Finder, Proactis and Delta eSourcing.
· Experience using CRM, estimating or project management systems such as Simpro or similar.
· Understanding of public sector procurement, framework agreements and social value requirements.
