Full job description

Assistant Accountant

Location: Salford, Manchester (Office-based)
Hours: Full-time, Permanent – 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: £28,000 – £30,000 per annum

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Assistant Accountant to join our finance team. This is a varied and hands-on role, ideal for someone with excellent attention to detail who enjoys taking ownership of day-to-day financial processes and working as part of a busy team.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the finance function, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting payroll, and assisting with month-end processes. Experience using Sage 50 is essential.

Key Responsibilities

As an Assistant Accountant, your responsibilities will include:

Managing the purchase ledger, including processing supplier invoices and preparing payment runs.
Maintaining the sales ledger, raising invoices, allocating payments, and supporting credit control activities.
Processing accounts payable and accounts receivable accurately and within agreed timescales.
Completing daily and monthly bank reconciliations.
Monitoring and reconciling intercompany transactions.
Assisting with cash flow monitoring and maintaining accurate financial records.
Supporting the preparation of monthly management information and financial reports.
Assisting with payroll preparation and processing, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
Reconciling supplier statements and resolving account queries promptly.
Posting journals and assisting with month-end and year-end accounting activities.
Ensuring financial records are maintained in accordance with company procedures and accounting standards.
Providing administrative support to the wider finance team as required.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Essential

A minimum of 2 years' experience working within an Accounts role or similar finance role.
At least 2 years' experience using Sage 50 Accounts.
A solid understanding of purchase ledger, sales ledger, bank reconciliations and general accounting processes.
Strong Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads effectively.
The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
A professional and confidential approach when handling sensitive financial information.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desirable

Experience supporting payroll processing.
AAT qualification or currently studying towards AAT.
Experience working within a multi-company environment.
