The UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science (DSIS) is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary environment where clinicians, scientists, engineers, and allied health professionals are constantly striving for innovative approaches to treatment and evaluation. Our research spans the full translational pathway, which is reflected in the multidisciplinary nature of our team. Our aim is to improve patient and population health, and the delivery and the quality of healthcare. We achieve this through improving our understanding of the biological, psychological and social determinants of health and clinical outcome, and through the development, implementation and evaluation of novel interventions.
The Central London NIHR Patient Safety Research Collaboration (CL-PSRC) is academically based within Targeted Intervention at Bloomsbury, and is a new endeavor funded for 5 years in the first instance, from 1 April 2023. The CL-PSRC focuses on patient safety challenges in surgical, perioperative, acute and critical care, taking a pathway-based approach which will also therefore encompass primary and community care. Patient and public involvement is at the heart of our research activities, and we have a strong commitment both to the ‘levelling up’ agenda in terms of research outputs, and also ensuring that our staff and our research reflect the diversity of our population, and the patients that the NHS serves. The PSRC is organized into themes of activity, each with its own leads and research projects. It is also a home to a career development academy, supporting PhD students including the postholder, postdoctoral and mid-career researchers, from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds.
The ‘Safer Evidence’ theme of the PSRC is focused on the generation of new knowledge and insights from electronic patient data, in combination with the development of cutting-edge methodologies in electronic clinical trial design and observational clinical studies. The theme has a strong translational component with the introduction of new tools and evidence into the healthcare system a key emphasis.
The main aims of the job will be to support the research team in the extraction, preparation, analysis and linkage of healthcare data from a range of sources.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to create software for a variety of uses, including to support the real-time analysis of patient data, hosting of machine learning models, and creating and deploying of user-interfaces to allow rapid translation of data and research insights back into clinical care.
Appointment details:
- The post is graded at grade 7, the annual salary for which ranges from £46,261 to £51,246 (including London Allowance).
- This is a full-time, fixed-term until 31 March 2028.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and independent data scientist to join our team at the Institute for Health Informatics. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team of clinician researchers, software engineers and electronic health record system specialists to support the following:
- Conduct collaborative research to extract knowledge and insight from datasets using a variety of mathematical, statistical and computational approaches.
- Develop software and scripts to implement these analyses in robust and reproducible ways.
- Work with research infrastructure developers and electronic health record system engineers to deploy these into production.
The successful candidate will have the following:
- Applicants must have a PhD, be studying towards PhD or equivalent experience.
- Experience with the core tools of data science and analytics, in a programmatic framework such as R, Python or Julia.
- Experience of working with large datasets and relational databases.
- Interest in innovative research method development and using digital software.
