What is NDT?
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a range of inspection methods used to examine materials, components and structures without causing damage to them. NDT helps identify defects, imperfections or potential failures that could affect safety, quality or performance.
Common NDT techniques include:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
- Dye Penetrant Testing (DPI/PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
- Eddy Current Testing (ECT)
NDT plays a vital role in ensuring that equipment, pipelines, pressure vessels, structures and welded components remain safe and fit for purpose.
Overall Purpose of the Role
The Apprentice NDT Technician will support the inspection team in carrying out non-destructive testing activities in accordance with company procedures, industry standards and client requirements.
Working under the supervision of qualified NDT personnel, the apprentice will develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to perform inspection activities safely and effectively whilst working towards recognised industry certifications.
Key Responsibilities
The Apprentice NDT Technician will:
- Assist with day-to-day inspection activities using a variety of NDT techniques and welding inspection methods.
- Learn how to conduct inspections to client specifications and industry standards.
- Support qualified technicians on projects both on-site and at client locations.
- Maintain accurate timesheets and associated documentation.
- Learn and comply with company, client and legislative requirements relating to NDT operations.
- Check equipment and consumables are fit for use and within calibration dates.
- Assist with the preparation of inspection reports and technical documentation.
- Keep supervisors informed of work progress and project status.
- Participate in all required training programmes and practical assessments.
- Work safely and responsibly at all times, following company procedures and site rules.
- Support the continuous improvement of inspection processes and working practices.
- Maintain and provide evidence of training, qualifications and certifications achieved throughout the apprenticeship.
- Adhere to the principles of independence, impartiality and integrity as defined within company procedures.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by management.
Qualifications and ExperienceEssential
- GCSE Grade 4/C or above in Maths, English and Science (or equivalent).
- Strong interest in engineering, inspection or technical disciplines.
- Willingness to learn and work towards industry-recognised NDT qualifications.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work safely and follow instructions.
Desirable
- Previous experience in engineering, manufacturing or construction environments.
- Basic knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing techniques.
- Knowledge of Applus+ services and operations.
- Any existing NDT, PCN, SNT-TC-1A or CSWIP qualifications.

- Work towards recognised industry certifications in accordance with SNT-TC-1A and BS EN ISO 9712 requirements.
- Develop technical, practical and professional skills to support a long-term career in NDT and inspection services.
