Bed Watch Security Supervisor

Location: Colchester General Hospital
Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 per annum (dependent upon experience)
Hours: Monday to Friday | 12-hour shifts | 60 hours per week
Contract Type: Full-Time | On-Site

MadiganGill delivers specialist Bed Watch and Patient Welfare Services to NHS Trusts and private healthcare providers across the UK. We are committed to supporting vulnerable patients who require enhanced supervision while receiving medical treatment, ensuring their safety, dignity, and wellbeing at all times.

We are currently seeking an experienced and professional Bed Watch Security Supervisor to lead and support our Bed Watch team at Colchester General Hospital. This is a demanding yet highly rewarding role that requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to operate effectively within a fast-paced healthcare environment.

The Role

As Bed Watch Security Supervisor, you will oversee the delivery of patient welfare and enhanced observation services, ensuring the highest standards of care, safety, and compliance are maintained. You will work closely with NHS clinical teams, safeguarding professionals, local authorities, and security personnel to support vulnerable patients who may present risks associated with mental health conditions, aggression, self-harm, absconding, or other challenging behaviours.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

Supervise and support Bed Watch personnel during daily operations.
Coordinate and manage Bed Watch and patient welfare services across the hospital.
Ensure all staff operate in accordance with company policies, NHS procedures, and contractual requirements.
Conduct effective shift briefings and comprehensive handovers.
Monitor service delivery standards and implement improvements where required.
Complete weekly timesheet audits and ensure accurate record keeping.
Prepare and submit incident reports and management reports as required.
Produce and present monthly KPI reports to the client.

Patient Welfare and Bed Watch Duties

Provide enhanced supervision and observation of vulnerable patients requiring continuous monitoring.
Conduct dynamic risk assessments and monitor patient behaviour to identify potential risks.
Support nursing staff and healthcare teams during patient interventions and management activities.
Recognise and report signs of distress, deterioration, self-harm risk, or escalating behaviours.
Maintain patient dignity, confidentiality, and welfare at all times.
Monitor patients subject to suicide watch procedures and escalate concerns immediately.

Stakeholder Management

Liaise closely with hospital response teams, clinical staff, safeguarding teams, and local authorities.
Support safeguarding investigations and contribute to multi-agency information sharing where appropriate.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with NHS staff, patients, families, and external agencies.
Act as a key point of contact between the client and operational teams.

Security and Safety Responsibilities

Assist with the safe management of aggressive, violent, disruptive, or high-risk patients in accordance with training and hospital procedures.
Support the prevention of absconding and unauthorised patient movement.
Secure and detain patients where legally authorised and clinically necessary, in accordance with NHS policies and legislation.
Accurately record and report incidents involving aggression, violence, self-harm, safeguarding concerns, or security breaches.
Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Essential Requirements

Valid SIA Door Supervisor Licence.
Previous supervisory or management experience within a dynamic and challenging environment.
Proven stakeholder management and client-facing experience.
Experience working within mental health services or a recognised Mental Health First Aider qualification.
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong observation, reporting, and decision-making abilities.
Physically fit and capable of undertaking duties within a healthcare setting.
Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.

Desirable Requirements

Previous experience working within the NHS, healthcare, social care
Experience managing vulnerable, challenging, or high-risk individuals.
Additional qualifications in conflict management, safeguarding, physical intervention, or security operations.
