About the role
We are seeking an experienced Training Manager with a strong background in Learning and Development (L&D), education or organisational learning to lead our training function.
This is an exciting opportunity for an educational professional who understands how adults learn, can develop engaging and effective learning solutions, and is passionate about creating a culture of continuous improvement.
This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring all training activities meet UK Department for Transport (DfT), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulatory requirements and the standards for ProtectUK, while supporting operational excellence across classroom, blended, and eLearning environments.
As Training Manager, you will lead the design, development, quality assurance and continuous improvement of our training portfolio.
You will provide strategic leadership to our team of instructors, ensuring that learning is evidence-based, learner-centred and aligned with both regulatory requirements and business objectives.
Working closely with operational subject matter experts, you will translate complex technical content into engaging learning experiences that improve knowledge, skills and performance.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement the organisation's learning and development strategy.
- Lead the design and continuous improvement of training programmes using recognised learning design methodologies.
- Ensure all learning interventions are aligned with adult learning principles and measurable learning outcomes.
- Manage and develop a team of professional instructors through coaching, mentoring and performance development.
- Introduce modern learning approaches including blended learning, digital learning and experiential learning where appropriate.
- Establish robust evaluation processes to measure learning effectiveness, knowledge transfer and organisational impact.
- Oversee quality assurance processes including course reviews, instructor observations and learner feedback.
- Maintain governance of learning documentation, curriculum management and version control.
- Work collaboratively with subject matter experts to develop innovative learning solutions.
- Identify future capability requirements and develop new learning products to support organisational growth.
- Ensure training activities support compliance with ISO 9001, DfT, CAA and other relevant quality standards.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Degree in Learning and Development, Education, Training, Organisational Development, Psychology or a related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- Significant experience managing a learning and development function or training department.
- Demonstrable expertise in instructional design and curriculum development.
- Strong understanding of adult learning theory and evidence-based learning practice.
- Experience leading and developing training professionals.
- Experience evaluating learning effectiveness using recognised evaluation methodologies.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and leadership skills.
- Strong project management and organisational skills.
- Experience implementing quality assurance and continuous improvement processes.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Education, Learning & Development or Organisational Development.
- Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 5 or Level 7 qualification in Learning & Development.
- Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Assessor and Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualifications.
- Experience working within a regulated industry such as aviation, transport, defence, emergency services or critical national infrastructure.
- Knowledge of competency-based training and assessment frameworks.
- Experience designing digital learning or blended learning programmes.
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and learning analytics.
- Experience supporting organisations certified to ISO 9001 or equivalent quality management systems.
