Full job description

Would you like a new challenge, working in a busy GP practice, whose aim is to make a real difference, to our diverse catchment population?

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant, to work mornings 5 days a week, Monday to Friday a total of 22 hours per week. There may be a requirement for you to work Saturday mornings on occasion.

You will be responsible, as part of our nursing team, and under the indirect supervision of the Lead Practice Nurse, for the delivery of high-quality patient focussed services, including venepuncture, annual diabetes reviews, mental health checks, urinalysis, administration of B12 injections, pneumonia, RSV and Covid vaccines, as well as participating in our annual flu vaccine campaign, health promotion and all other healthcare Assistant duties.

Role Summary:

To support the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the patient population.
To deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

Primary Responsibilities:

Undertake venepuncture
Carry out observations and biometrics such as BP, Pulse, height and weight and foot checks as part of diabetes reviews
Carry out mental health check reviews
Support the practice nurses with health promotion programmes
When trained administer B12 injections and pneumonia/RSV and Covid vaccines
Act as a chaperone as required
When trained, administer flu vaccinations as part of the seasonal flu campaign
Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

Secondary Responsibilities:

Participate in practice audits as directed by the Lead Practice Nurse
Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
Removal of stitches and staples

Role Specification:

Essential
Qualifications
Healthcare qualification or equivalent level
Phlebotomy certification

Experience
6 months’ relevant experience working in a primary care environment in the last 2 years
Experience of working with the general public
Experience of working in a healthcare setting

Clinical Knowledge & Skills

Essential
Venepuncture
Ability to record accurate clinical notes

Desirable
Immunisation (flu, B12, Covid, RSV, pneumonia)
Wound Care / Removal of sutures & staples
Chaperone procedure

General Skills
Essential
Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
Strong IT skills
Clear, polite telephone manner
Effective time management (Planning & Organising)
Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
Good interpersonal skills
Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure
Competent in the use of Office and Outlook
