Responsible for: Completing a Traditional Building Apprenticeship through a series of work placements and a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Building Maintenance Operations through Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, attending college one day a week throughout the apprenticeship.
Essential: Valid Driving licence with access to a vehicle
1. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
1.1. The main purpose of this role is to provide practical, work‑based experience through structured placements with external building contractors, enabling apprentices to develop traditional building skills and complete their apprenticeship qualification. The Authority’s role is to support and coordinate the programme rather than provide work placements directly.
1.2. Ultimately, these roles aim to strengthen the availability of traditional skills among contractors in the north‑west of Wales.
1.3. To assist the Eryri National Park Authority’s Cultural Heritage Service in delivering its objectives and Cultural Heritage Strategy.
1.4. To foster and maintain good relationships between residents, land managers, visitors, the construction sector, and conservation and cultural interests.
2. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1. Complete the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Building Maintenance Operations through Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, attending college one day a week throughout the apprenticeship.
- Spend time working with at least three different contractors. These placements may include (but are not limited to) Llanberis, Llanrwst, and the Porthmadog area.
- Ensure excellent customer care principles are applied to all aspects of service delivery within the role.
- Encourage and motivate volunteers.
- Promote adherence to the Countryside Code and local codes of conduct.
- Present and promote the organisation’s values and characteristics.
- Take due care for your own Health and Safety and that of others.
3. CONTEXT
3.1. The Cultural Heritage team of Eryri National Park Authority (ENPA) is responsible for a wide range of conservation and community projects at both landscape and townscape scale, delivering the first purpose of the National Park: to protect and enhance the cultural heritage of Eryri, as well as providing opportunities for everyone to learn about and understand the Park’s special qualities, and to support the area’s economic and social well‑being.
These apprenticeships are funded by the Welsh Government as part of the Historic Dolgellau Decarbonisation Project. The project includes grants for decarbonisation work on listed buildings within the Dolgellau conservation area and a broad traditional skills programme, including these apprenticeships.
4. WORKING ARRANGEMENTS
4.1. The role will be administratively based at the NPA offices in Penrhyndeudraeth; however, apprentices will not undertake formal work placements within the ENPA. Apprentices will spend most of their time working with external contractors across Gwynedd and Conwy as part of their structured placement programme. Travel costs can be claimed at 55p per mile between Penrhyndeudraeth and the work placement locations.
The ENPA’s role is to coordinate and support the apprenticeship programme, rather than act as a placement provider.

Essential
- GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- Awareness of the purposes of National Parks.
- Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate in Welsh and English (or willingness to improve Welsh).
- Full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
- Self-motivated, willing to learn, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable
- Awareness of Eryri National Park and its built environment.
- Level 2 qualification in Construction or Building Engineering Services.
- Basic IT and Microsoft Office skills.
- Knowledge of the local area.
