About the role

This role sits right at the heart of how our practice runs day to day.

As our Payroll Processor, you’ll be trusted with making sure payroll runs smoothly, accurately and calmly for a portfolio of clients.

You won’t just be “running payroll”.

You’ll be the person who makes sure everything is set up properly, checked properly, and delivered properly every single time. If payroll is going to run without errors, without stress and without last-minute chaos, it will be because you’ve made sure it does. You’ll work to clear processes, keep tidy records, and deliver clean, reliable outputs that our senior team can depend on.

When something doesn’t look right, you’ll question it.
When information is missing, you’ll chase it early.
When deadlines are approaching, you’ll already be in control.

This is very much a delivery and ownership role, not advisory. You’ll have support around you, but we’re looking for someone who takes pride in being organised, reliable and quietly excellent at keeping things running smoothly.

What you’ll actually be doing

Your work will fall into a few clear areas:

Payroll processing
Processing client payrolls to agreed schedules
Calculating pay, tax, NI and deductions accurately
Managing starters, leavers and changes
Running pre payroll checks and resolving issues early

RTI & compliance

Submitting RTI returns on time
Making sure payroll compliance is handled properly
Monitoring submissions and fixing issues quickly

Pensions & statutory payments

Processing pension contributions and submissions
Administering statutory payments (SSP, SMP, etc.)
Making sure everything is correctly recorded and evidenced

Payroll records & control

Keeping employee and payroll records accurate and up to date
Maintaining clear and tidy payroll files
Ensuring everything is easy to follow and audit

Client & team support

Requesting payroll data from clients clearly and early
Following up missing information before deadlines
Responding to payroll queries in a calm, professional way
Providing clean outputs to the wider team

What “good” looks like

You’ll know you’re doing well when:

Payroll runs on time, every time
Errors are rare and caught early
RTI submissions go through without issues
Clients feel informed and organised, not chased and stressed
Senior team members aren’t fixing avoidable problems
Deadlines feel controlled, not pressured

This role is likely to suit you if

You have at least 3 year's experience in payroll processing (ideally in practice or bureau)
You’re comfortable with payroll software (preferably BrightPay)
You like processes, structure and getting things right first time
You’re accurate, organised and not afraid to ask questions
You take pride in doing things properly, not just quickly
You understand that payroll compliance really matters

Qualifications & experience

Desirable (but not essential if experience is strong):

CIPP – Certificate in Payroll Practice / Payroll Technician Certificate
CIPP – Foundation Degree in Payroll Management
AAT (particularly Level 3 or 4 with payroll exposure)

Experience:

Ideally 3+ years payroll processing
Experience of RTI submissions and payroll compliance
Experience working with multiple client payrolls (practice/bureau) is a bonus
