Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Head and Neck Clinical Service Unit at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for an experienced and dynamic senior nurse to join our senior leadership team as Head of Nursing.

This pivotal role will play a key part in shaping and delivering the Trust's strategic objectives, ensuring the provision of high-quality, safe, effective and patient-centred care across the Head and Neck CSU. The successful candidate will provide professional nursing leadership and work collaboratively with clinical, operational and corporate colleagues to drive excellence in patient experience, clinical outcomes, workforce development and service delivery.

We are seeking an ambitious and forward-thinking nurse leader who brings strong negotiating and influencing skills, alongside the ability to thrive within a large, complex organisation. The post holder will provide visible, compassionate and credible leadership, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and accountability across nursing and multidisciplinary teams.

Why you should join our Team

As Head of Nursing, you will be responsible for ensuring robust systems and processes are in place to support safe staffing, effective workforce utilisation and compliance with professional and regulatory standards. You will provide assurance regarding quality, safety and clinical effectiveness, leading on the identification, management and mitigation of risks while promoting a culture of learning, innovation and continuous improvement.

Working closely with the Clinical Director, General Manager and wider multidisciplinary teams, you will provide strategic nursing leadership across the CSU, ensuring that nursing practice reflects the highest professional standards and supports the delivery of outstanding care. You will play a key role in developing the nursing workforce, embedding a positive culture, and driving improvements in quality, safety, patient experience and operational performance.

The role requires an exceptional leader who can inspire and motivate teams, champion nursing excellence and work collaboratively with colleagues across organisational boundaries to deliver the highest standards of care for patients and their families.

What you will bring to the role

The Head of Nursing has overall responsibility for the leadership and line management of nursing/midwifery across the CSU and is the named and identified lead for all issues of nursing/midwifery practice within the CSU.
Identified as the senior nurse/midwife within the CSU Triumvirate responsible for decision making where practice or service delivery issues cross matron specialities or require cross speciality leadership.
Has overall responsibility for the delivery of safe and clinically effective care within the CSU - providing assurance evidence in this regard to the Director of Nursing and Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Has line management responsibility for Matrons and directly reporting ward managers within the CSU.
Leads and manages the clinical services in defined clinical areas/specialities.
Deputises for the Clinical Director when required.
Utilises leadership and management skills to ensure the effective planning and delivery of nursing care and services across the CSU planning for seasonal variations in case mix and workload and collaborating with other Heads of Nursing where cross CSU working is required.
Provides credible, visible and effective leadership, to Matrons and the nursing/midwifery team within the CSU.

Through performance management and monitoring, ensures essential quality standards are achieved and improved. Leads and participates in performance review programmes throughout the clinical areas.
Contributes to the leadership of nursing and midwifery within the Trust as a member of the professional forum.

Develops mechanisms to enable Matrons to develop and strengthen their leadership and management skills in order to meet the responsibilities of their roles.
Actively works to support and empower Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses to develop and utilise their clinical leadership skills. Enabling them to assume appropriate levels of authority to undertake their role effectively to support and develop the leadership within their wards and teams.
Takes the lead on defined and time limited projects or work programmes across the CSU identified by the Director of Nursing to support the delivery of Trust priorities, national and local professional priorities and objectives.
Takes the lead on defined areas of professional practice on behalf of the Director of Nursing
Participates in Trust initiatives to develop and improve clinical practice and patient care, providing expert advice and current service provision future developments.

Participates in the Trust on-call rota
