Job Title: Pickup Delivery Driver
Reporting To: Depot Manager and Transport Manager
Primary Location: High Wycombe Depot, with travel to other Company premises and to customer and supplier sites within the area as required.
Hours: Shift basis. A standard shift is 8.5 hours, normally worked between 07:00 and 16:30 with two unpaid 30-minute breaks — approximately 42.5 hours per week, including alternate Saturdays. Shift times and patterns may vary with operational requirements.
Purpose of the Role
The Pickup Driver is a central, hands-on role that keeps the High Wycombe depot running and puts the right equipment in front of the right customer at the right time. The role has two sides that work together: out on the road, you are the face of Greenplant, delivering and collecting plant, tools, and equipment safely and professionally; back at the depot, you help keep the yard, fleet, and operation in good order so that everything is clean, ready, and where it should be.
This is a practical, customer-facing role that combines safe driving and load handling with depot work, sound judgement, and a genuine commitment to service. You will take pride in your vehicle, your loads, the condition of the equipment, and the impression you leave with every customer.
Key Responsibilities
1. Deliveries and Collections
Delivering and collecting plant, tools, and equipment is the heart of this role and must be carried out safely, efficiently, and to schedule.
- Load, transport, and unload hire equipment to and from customer sites safely and in line with the daily delivery and collection schedule on your mobile MCS app.
- Photograph equipment as delivered and report on the MCS mobile app.
- Communicate promptly with the depot about any delays, access problems, or changes on site so customers can be kept informed.
- On collection, carry out a visual check of returned equipment, photograph and report using the MCS mobile app and report any obvious damage, defects, or missing items to the Depot Manage
2. Loading and Security:
Every load must be secured correctly. Safe loading protects you, other road users, the customer, and the equipment.
- Ensure all plant, tools, and equipment are correctly loaded, distributed, and fully secured before any journey begins.
- Use the correct straps, chains, and securing equipment for each item, and check loads remain secure throughout the journey.
- Assist customers with safe loading and unloading where required, including onto their own vehicles.
3. Vehicle Checks and Maintenance
Your vehicle is your responsibility while it is in your care and must be kept roadworthy, clean, and presentable.
- Carry out daily walkaround checks before first use, recording defects and reporting them immediately.
- Keep the vehicle clean inside and out so that it presents Greenplant well at every customer site.
- Ensure the vehicle is fuelled, serviceable, and complies with all legal and safety requirements at all times.
- Report any accident, damage, or mechanical concern to the Depot Manager or Transport Manager without delay.
4. Depot and Yard Operations
When you are not on the road, you play a full part in running the depot. The yard and fleet are the face of the business and must be kept clean, safe, and ready for hire.
- Clean, check, and prepare returned plant and equipment for re-hire, reporting any damage or defects on MCS.
- Keep the yard tidy, clear of debris, and well-organised, with equipment parked logically and safe routes maintained for vehicles and pedestrians.
- Assist with loading and unloading lorries and moving machinery around the yard to support deliveries, collections, and hire preparation.
- Help keep the workshop, welfare, and common areas clean and safe, and support colleagues with general depot tasks as needed.
5. Customer Service and On-Site Conduct
You represent Greenplant on every doorstep and on every site. A calm, helpful, and professional manner is expected at all times.
- Deliver consistently courteous and professional service, answering customer questions and resolving issues where you reasonably can.
- Demonstrate the safe and correct use of hire equipment when asked, within the limits of your training.
- Observe site rules, sign-in procedures, and any PPE requirements at every customer location.
- Feed back useful information from site — customer requests, opportunities, or concerns — to the depot team.
6. Systems, Documentation and Compliance
Accurate records keep the business running and keep us on the right side of the law. A reasonable level of computer literacy is required for this role.
- Process deliveries, collections, and returns accurately on the Company’s MCS hire management system, and complete all condition and signature paperwork.
- Maintain accurate records of working hours, breaks, and vehicle mileage in line with company policy and legal requirements.
- Adhere to all driving regulations, speed limits, and road traffic law, and to the terms of any Working Time Regulations agreement.
- Comply fully with health and safety guidelines, RAMS, and company procedures at all times.
7. General Duties
This role requires a flexible, ‘can-do’ approach. You will be expected to assist with whatever is needed to keep the depot running effectively, which may include:
- Supporting colleagues with any reasonable ad hoc operational task
- Running general errands as directed by the Depot Manager or senior staff.
- Attending training as required and applying what you learn on the job.
- Working at other Company premises or customer and supplier sites when asked.
