At Guy's Hospital, our Cancer Services Pharmacy Technician team is growing and this vacancy has arisen as a direct result of the career progression of our existing staff, with recent promotions within the team reflecting our strong commitment to developing our people. You will be part of a supportive and experienced team of Medicines Management Pharmacy Technicians, rotating across haematology and oncology wards. This varied role offers excellent opportunities to broaden your clinical knowledge, develop new skills, and gain valuable experience in different specialist areas. Acting as a vital link between ward teams and pharmacy services, you will help optimise medicines use and enhance the patient experience.

As a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician within Cancer Services at Guy’s Hospital, you will play a key role in delivering a safe, high quality, and patient centred pharmaceutical service to patients admitted to the inpatient cancer wards.

Working closely with pharmacists, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help ensure patients receive safe, effective, and timely medicines support throughout their inpatient stay, contributing directly to improved patient outcomes, patient experience, and medicines safety.

You will support the delivery and ongoing development of ward based medicines management services across inpatient oncology and haematology areas. Responsibilities include medicines reconciliation, assessing and managing patients’ own medicines, counselling patients, facilitating timely discharge processes, and ensuring seamless transitions of care.

A key aspect of the role is contributing to service improvement initiatives that enhance the quality, efficiency, and safety of pharmacy services within Cancer Services. We are looking for a motivated Pharmacy Technician who is passionate about cancer care, committed to continuous improvement, and dedicated to delivering high standards of medicines management within the inpatient setting at Guy's Hospital .

You will be responsible for providing a safe, efficient and accurate ward based pharmacy service by liaising closely with pharmacists, nursing and medical staff. This role will help you to develop Medicines Optimisation and Patient Counselling skills.

Patient Centred Medicines Management

Provide ward based medicines management services, including medicine reconciliation, discharge planning, and patient and carer counselling.

Act as a key link between ward teams and pharmacy services, helping to resolve medicines related issues and optimise the patient experience.

Ensure the safe, effective, and timely supply of medicines to patients across the inpatient cancer wards at Guy's Hospital.

Dispensing and Medicines Safety

Undertake dispensing, final accuracy checking (as an Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician), and issuing of medicines to maintain a safe and efficient service.

Complete medication storage audits, including Controlled Drug audits, stock reconciliation, and expiry checks, reporting any discrepancies promptly.

Develop and maintain a safe, efficient, and cost-effective medicines supply service to patients.

Teamwork, Training, and Development

Work collaboratively with nursing, medical, and pharmacy colleagues within the inpatient cancer ward teams as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service development projects.

Support the training and supervision of rotational pharmacy staff and trainees, contributing to a culture of continuous learning.

You will work in a structured environment providing support to the wider team to meet key directorates targets. This will include delivering pharmacy services to a range of patients with complex cancer conditions, supporting and training junior staff.

Candidates should have demonstrable competencies in hospital clinical pharmacy practice, excellent communication skills and commitment to pharmaceutical care. Furthermore candidates should be highly organised.
