Full job description

Cable Process Design Engineer

[Desired start date] July/August 2026

Overview

The Cable Process Design Engineer is responsible for designing and managing
cable manufacturing processes from inquiry through production. This role
coordinates closely with project, production, procurement, and supplier teams
to develop cable structures, material specifications, and process designs that
meet quality, cost, and delivery targets.
The engineer also monitors direct manufacturing costs, supports corrective
actions for production issues, ensures compliance with internal procedures
and ISO standards, and maintains accurate documentation to support stable
and efficient cable manufacturing operations.
This role may involve training at our manufacturing site in Japan

Duties and Responsibilities

Design and manage cable manufacturing processes in accordance with departmental
procedures and project inquiry requirements.
Develop cable process designs based on inquiry sheets issued by the Cable Design Project Team, including:
- Preparation of cable manufacturing design sheets (materials, diameter, thickness, and weight etc...)
- Determination of cable length design across all manufacturing processes
- Definition of cable material standards for suppliers
- Coordination of raw material ordering in cooperation with the Procurement team
- Coordination of cable termination design and ordering in collaboration with headoffice in Japan
Manage and monitor cable direct manufacturing costs based on project inquiries.
Collect and analyze direct cost data for each project and support cost improvement actions.
Support corrective actions and troubleshooting for cable-related production issues.
Coordinate closely with project and production teams to ensure smooth cable manufacturing operations.
Provide work instructions and technical support to production and technical staff as required.
Monitor production processes from material input to finished output through close communication
with the production team, and take necessary actions to maintain stable production.
Ensure compliance with quality standards, approved cable construction methods, and internal procedures.
Prepare, maintain, and control production-related documentation, including progress records and
output reports, and distribute them to relevant stakeholders.
Monitor material usage and inventory levels, and submit procurement requests for managerial approval.
Comply with managerial instructions and participate in internal meetings, reviews, and development-related activities.
Support continuous improvement activities and ensure the application of ISO standards in daily operations.

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Ability to work independently and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
Good interpersonal and coordination skills, with the ability to provide work instructions and technical guidance when required.
Technical training or equivalent hands-on experience in industrial or manufacturing environments.
Ability to handle workload effectively during peak or constrained production phases.
Capability to achieve production targets and required output levels set by production management.
Familiarity with basic production planning and scheduling tools or charts.
Working knowledge of computer software used in manufacturing or production environments.
Proficiency in documentation control and production record management.
Knowledge of and ability to apply ISO standards in daily operations (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001).

Preferred

Practical experience in cable manufacturing or cable production.
Understanding of cable manufacturing processes and production flow.
Experience in a functional or technical role related to cable production

About our project in Port of Nigg, Highland

Sumitomo Electric is one of the leading global manufacturers of state-of-the-art high-end electricity transmission
cables, up to and including 525kV HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) cable.
The new factory at Nigg, with investment value announced by the Scottish Government of £350M, will make a
significant contribution towards realisation of the UK Net Zero Target by contributing to critical electricity transmission
infrastructure to connect and deliver renewable energy, including offshore wind, to UK consumers and beyond.
In addition, the factory will create more than 150 highly skilled jobs in the Scottish Highlands, with maximum
utilisation of the local supply chain for production of cables and construction of transmission cable systems.

In a significant boost for the UK green energy supply chain, Sumitomo Electric has commenced construction
of its state-of-the-art subsea transmission cable factory in the Scottish Highlands.
The factory will supply critical elements for the reinforcement of the UK electricity transmission grid and for
connecting renewable energy production facilities to the grid.
