Full job description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Management Accountant to take overall responsibility for the financial efficiency and well-being of our business. Reporting directly to the Director, you will manage the day-to-day financial operations of the company, providing accurate financial reporting, cashflow management, payroll processing, and strategic financial support.

Key Responsibilities

Manage monthly nominal ledger postings and prepare timely monthly management accounts.
Oversee the financial management of the company's job management system, ensuring all reports are accurate and up to date.
Conduct profitability analysis across all areas of the business and provide recommendations for improvement.
Assist in the preparation of annual accounts for external accountants.
Process and issue client sales invoices.
Manage sales and purchase ledgers.
Oversee credit control activities, including coordinating the recovery of outstanding debts.
Process monthly payroll accurately and on time.
Prepare cashflow forecasts and manage company cashflow requirements.
Manage supplier payments, pension contributions, and tax liabilities.
Prepare and submit quarterly VAT and CIS returns to HMRC.
Undertake ad hoc financial projects and reporting as required by the Director.

About You

The ideal candidate will be an experienced finance professional with a strong understanding of management accounting and day-to-day financial operations. You will have:

Previous experience working in a Management Accountant or similar finance role.
Experience within an engineering, contracting, construction, or similar project-based environment.
Experience processing payroll, including the ability to accurately review and interpret employee timesheets.
Experience managing payroll processes, including deductions, pensions, and HMRC requirements.
AAT Level 4 qualification, or be full or part qualified ACCA / CIMA (or equivalent).
Strong management accounting and financial reporting skills.
Experience preparing management accounts and analysing financial performance.
Knowledge of sales ledger, purchase ledger, credit control, and cashflow management.
Experience with VAT returns, CIS returns, and HMRC submissions.
Experience managing subcontractor-related financial processes would be advantageous.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends, investigate variances, and provide recommendations.
Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to financial processes.
Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise confidently with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
Ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
