About the Role
Study Mind is seeking a compassionate, patient and engaging SEN Maths Tutor to support a bright Year 8 student who is currently unable to fully access education due to anxiety and emotionally based barriers to school attendance.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a tutor who enjoys building confidence first and understands that positive relationships are the foundation of successful learning. You'll play a key role in helping this young person rebuild trust in education through calm, structured and engaging 1:1 tuition.
About the Student
Our student is an intelligent and naturally inquisitive Year 8 learner who has experienced a prolonged period of disrupted education.
He has a genuine interest in Maths and enjoys understanding how things work, often asking thoughtful questions about topics that capture his interest. In a busy classroom these questions were difficult to accommodate, contributing to frustration and disengagement.
Recent family illness and bereavement have also had a significant impact on his confidence and emotional wellbeing, making a gentle, supportive return to learning especially important.
Your Role
You will deliver engaging 1:1 Maths tuition, with an emphasis on:
- Rebuilding confidence in learning through positive relationships.
- Delivering engaging, personalised KS3 Maths sessions.
- Filling knowledge gaps at the student's pace.
- Encouraging curiosity and independent thinking.
- Creating a calm, predictable learning environment where the student feels safe to succeed.
- Supporting gradual re-engagement with education.
Student Interests
Building lessons around the student's interests will be key to successful engagement.
He enjoys:
- Star Wars
- Maths
- Science
- Asking questions and exploring how things work
He thrives when adults take the time to answer his questions and encourage curiosity rather than rushing through activities.
Teaching Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Build rapport before introducing challenge.
- Deliver practical, engaging and personalised Maths lessons.
- Break learning into manageable steps.
- Encourage discussion and problem-solving.
- Celebrate small successes to rebuild confidence.
- Adapt sessions around the student's emotional needs on the day.
- Maintain clear routines and predictable session structures.
Emotional Support
The student experiences significant anxiety around education and benefits from adults who are calm, patient and emotionally attuned.
A tutor who can provide reassurance, consistency and encouragement will have the greatest impact. Quiet, low-pressure learning environments help him engage and make progress.
We're Looking For Someone Who Has Experience With:
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs)
- Anxiety and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
- Re-engaging students following prolonged absence from education
- Delivering engaging KS3 Maths tuition
- Building confidence through relationship-led practice
Experience supporting students with dyslexia or recognising and adapting for literacy-related barriers would also be advantageous.
Essential Requirements
- Experience working with young people with additional needs.
- Strong KS3 Maths knowledge.
- Calm, patient and nurturing communication style.
- Excellent relationship-building skills.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
- Strong safeguarding awareness.
