Job Description

Job Title: Tutor

We are looking for part-time Tutors who are primary or secondary specialists, committed to helping young people thrive. We are particularly keen to hear from teachers who can deliver GCSE-level Maths, English and/or Science.

Start Date: September 2026

Primary Purpose of Job: To provide bespoke, one-to-one tutoring to young people aged 8–18, supporting engagement in education, progress towards qualifications, and, where appropriate, transition back into a school or learning setting.

Hours: Each placement will typically be between 4–20 hours per week. Timings are flexible and agreed in advance. Once agreed, sessions take place at a consistent time each week during term time only.

Contract: Self Employed – You will be responsible for managing your own tax, National Insurance contributions, and invoicing.

Hourly Rate: £30.09 (increase pending 01/09/2026)

Person Specification

You will be responsible for planning and delivering a personalised tutoring programme for the young people you support. This will require a flexible, creative, and highly individualised approach, tailored to each young person’s needs and EHCP outcomes.

Working on a one-to-one basis, you will need to build trust and engagement, working at the young person’s pace to reintroduce learning in a way that feels accessible and achievable.

Many of the young people we support have an EHCP, often with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and may not currently be attending school. Using their EHCP outcomes as a framework, you will design and deliver a learning pathway that supports progress, builds confidence, and, where appropriate, enables transition back into education or achievement of qualifications.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of professionalism and a strong commitment to supporting young people to re-engage with education and develop resilience.

Essential Criteria

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with young people and their families
An empathetic, child-centred approach, with the ability to build confidence and self-esteem
A strong belief in young people’s potential and ability to progress
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to differentiate teaching and adapt approaches to meet a wide range of needs
Experience working with young people with EHCPs and/or additional needs
A clear understanding of safeguarding and child protection
A valid Enhanced DBS check (or registered on the Update Service)
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work
Right to live and work in the UK

Specific Responsibilities

Plan and deliver differentiated, engaging tutoring sessions based on individual need
Support young people to work towards outcomes set out in their EHCP
Prepare students for exams or assessments where appropriate
Submit clear and timely session reports (within 24 hours)
Track and record attendance, engagement, and progress
Mark and assess work, providing constructive and encouraging feedback
Maintain up-to-date subject knowledge and teaching practice
Work in line with JHF policies, particularly safeguarding and data protection
Demonstrate professionalism at all times, representing the values and aims of the charity
