Reporting to: Assistant Finance Director or Finance Director

Role Summary:

The Financial Controller plays a pivotal role at the heart of delivery by acting as the final quality gatekeeper before work reaches senior team members. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you combine technical expertise, team leadership, and operational control to ensure exceptional standards across all client work.

You will be the engine room of the team by driving workflow, maintaining momentum, and ensuring every piece of work is accurate, complete, and commercially sound. As a trusted reviewer and problem solver, you will develop both the quality of output and the capability of those around you, while building confidence with clients through clear, proactive communication.

This role is about more than just producing numbers, it’s about owning the final detail, shaping team performance, and ensuring the business delivers consistently excellent work. The Financial Controller brings structure, pace, and precision to the team, acting as the critical link between delivery and leadership.

1. Leading a quality service

Act as the final reviewer of work, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency before submission to the Assistant FD or FD
Producing high quality and accurate work including YE accounts, working papers and MA
Validate outputs by cross-checking work produced by others including management accounts, working papers, and supporting documentation
Take ownership of quality control, ensuring all work meets required technical and professional standards
Provide clear, constructive feedback to team members, driving continuous improvement and reducing recurring errors
Support internal training and development, raising the overall capability and confidence of the team through mentoring, training and coaching.

2. Leading the Team – Workflow and Delivery

Manage day-to-day workflow across the team, ensuring deadlines and KPIs are consistently achieved
Allocate and reprioritise work in response to capacity challenges, holidays, and changing demands
Maintain oversight of workloads, ensuring efficient “flow” of work and minimising bottlenecks
Proactively identify and escalate risks to delivery (e.g. resource gaps, delays) to the Assistant FD / FD
Coordinate team activities to ensure statutory deadlines and client expectations are met and delivered.

3. Production of Complex Work

Prepare high-quality, complex financial work, including statutory accounts, group structures, WIP, and deferred revenue
Delivers and reviews work independently with minimal revisions made AFD or FD
Apply strong technical expertise to ensure compliance and accuracy across all outputs
Take ownership of resolving complex technical queries, ensuring work is complete and robust before review
Support the delivery of technically demanding work and queries, acting as a key escalation point within the team.

4. Client Communication and Service Delivery

Act as a confident and professional point of contact for clients, handling queries and resolving issues effectively
Manage client communication around information requests, deadlines, and service issues
Identify and respond to client concerns or “grumbles,” escalating where appropriate to the Assistant FD / FD
Build trust with clients through clear, proactive, and solutions-focused communication
Support the delivery of a consistent, high-quality client experience across all interactions.

5. Self-Leadership and Continuous Development

Maintain and develop strong technical knowledge, staying up to date with industry trends and regulatory changes.
Consistent in hitting own personal KPI’s and deliverables
Monitor and stay informed of regulatory and legislative changes affecting what we do or our clients businesses
Develop proficiency in relevant systems and software through continuous self-learning.
Take ownership of personal performance, contributing positively to team culture and standards.

Qualifications and Key Skills:

- ACA or ACCA NQ or last exam – or equivalent experience

- Organisational and prioritisation skills

- Skilled in delivering great feedback to others to aid development

- Ability to deliver high quality management accounts and year end accounts

- Able to identify, raise and address issues Raising issues quickly

- Excellent client management and communication skills

- Mentorship and team training – peer to peer

Pay: £38,000.00-£44,000.00 per year
