JOB DESCRIPTION / PERSON SPECIFICATION

JOB TITLE: PRESCHOOL ASSISTANT

BASED: PUFFINS AT BEER PRE-SCHOOL, BEER

RESPONSIBLE TO: PRE-SCHOOL MANAGER & COMMITTEE

JOB PURPOSE: The role will be to work as part of a friendly team under the direction of the Preschool Manager or Deputy Playleader, providing a high standard of physical, social, and emotional care for the children in our setting.

Hours of Work

Flexible from term to term = 16hours initially (9.00am till 3:30pm on Monday and 9.00 till 1pm on Tuesday and Thursday 9.00am till 1pm) Term time weeks per year

Pay

£12.71 per hour paid on a four weekly basis to be stretched over 52 weeks including holiday pay.

Duties and Responsibilities

Liaison

To help to develop and maintain good relationships and communications with parents/carers to facilitate day-to-day caring needs.
To encourage parental involvement and support through the development of effective working relationships.
To support the children and involve them in the managers set out activities and planning.

Supervision and care of children

Ensure that activities are carried out in a safe and responsible manner in accordance with statutory responsibilities.
Ensure that you are aware of the Safeguarding Policy and Procedures and have undertaken awareness training.
Where food is provided, to ensure that it is balanced and healthy in accordance with recommended dietary requirements.

Direct Play work

Support the children in doing a wide range of creative and enjoyable activities.
Ensure that play meets the full range of children's individual and group needs.
To fully support inclusive practice and ensure that all children can be involved in the activities offered if they wish.
To act as a key person to a small group of children, liaising closely with parents and ensuring each child’s need are met and to work with parents and the child to keep a record of achievement file on our key child.
To undertake continuous professional development, including short courses and qualifications relevant to play work.
To promote the aims and objectives of the setting.
To understand and adhere to Setting policies, procedures, and standards at all times.
To assist with the preparation and maintenance of materials and equipment.
Recording accidents in the accident book.
To always ensure confidentially within the setting.
To participate in activities which fall outside of normal working hours as required, eg. Training, Staff Meetings etc
To undertake such other duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature as may be determined from time to time by the Manger or deputy.
To support and evaluate the children’s progress through tapestry.(digital tool).

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential Criteria:

Skills, aptitude, knowledge, and experience

An understanding of the principles of play work
A commitment to the provision of high-quality childcare
A positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through teamwork and training opportunities.
Enthusiasm for engaging with the children.
Creativity to devise new ideas and engage the children in activities.

Personal qualities

Excellent communication skills, with children, colleagues, advisors, and parents/carers.
Patience, punctuality, reliability, and trustworthiness
A positive approach to inclusive practice, with children, parents/carers, and colleagues
Enthusiasm for working with children and young people.

Qualifications

Completion of a recognised, relevant Level 3 qualification, eg. NVQ 3 in Play work – or be working towards completion.
A positive approach to gaining further qualifications, and continuous professional development.
Some understanding of the importance of Health & Safety and Food Hygiene in the workplace

Desirable Criteria

Previous experience of play work with children aged 2 -5 in a voluntary or paid capacity.
Good organisational and planning skills
Flexibility/ adaptability
Able to work in small teams.
Completion of a recognised Level 3 Play work qualification, or be working towards completion
Health & Safety certificate
First Aid certificate
Completion of other relevant courses
Safeguarding awareness training

*An Enhanced CRB and satisfactory references would be obtained prior to commencement of employment You will be expected to join the DBS online yearly update service if you are not already registered.
